A question from someone at work that had me stumped .....

Are there any lakes or rivers within the SAS area that are good/safe for swimming in? Probably with kids too.

As I say, I was stumped on this one.

There's a website for that, searchable by region as well. smile

VW was my first thought but i'm not sure i'd want to swim in VW although i have seen people do it.

Dorney and Thorpe are the only other ones i can think of and both are more sports/training than kids.

Dorney is used by BG for their swimming events but not sure you can just turn up. Thorpe is the same.

We used to swim in Virginia Water but that was 45+ years ago and they used to have an area for swimming. Mind you we also used to swim in the Thames at Marlow and pretty well any other river as long as it was warm enough hehe

Last weekend we saw people swimming in Eton in the river behind the college. Looked pretty safe and a nice area for a picnic while you're there.

Years ago, Black Park had a logged section for swimming, but we stopped going when we saw a load of s washing themselves in it.

Couldn't you say the same for any river/lake swimming spot?

Indeed, I wouldn't like to catch Weil's from swimming in any river or lake spot. smile

To be fair, you'd be more likely to catch it from the grass on the riverbank than from the water. And you can do that without swimming.

Lots of people in the Thames last weekend in the Reading area. Seems to be a nice spot down at Thames Valley Park, nice banks with a nice gradient once in. I have been in the water quite a lot during this hot period, absolutely lovely, you cannot beat swimming in a river. The floods over the winter created a little Island, kids (5,8,9)love it and spend a lot of time on and in the water (buoyancy aid the only rule).

indeed, and as a good swimmer I always find these deaths hard to understand, yet clearly they happen which is tragic for all concerned.
