Moving to Staines with Work recommended areas
Discussion
Good evening,
I have recently accepted a job in the Staines area TW18 Kingston Road.
I will at first be looking to commute on a weekly basis from the North East of England to rented accommodation.
Which areas would you recommend to look at for accommodation. I have currently been researching properties to rent within a 5 mile radius as to minimise time spent in rush hour traffic.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks and Regards
Ross

No idea on your age, personal circumstances, what you like to do in your spare time, etc...
But if your not averse to commuting by train and don't need your car for work everyday then I'd say you could do a lot worse than look at Richmond, rents aren't too horrific for what you get and you're on the tube network and Waterloo is less than 20 minutes away, as will be your workplace. You'll be able to enjoy London a lot more living there than you will be able to in Staines, Windsor etc.
If it's the quiet countryside/village feel you're after then Lower Sunbury etc would be more suitable.

Looks like we may be working in the same place.
I moved down to Staines six months ago and was in a similar position to you. I stayed in a B&B for two months. Within weeks of moving down I'd decided Staines was a decent enough place and had everything I needed.
Staines has plenty of shops, a few decent bars, great transport links to heathrow and into london in 35 min. Easy to get to as its right on the M25. Also you can never get lost as you always just follow signs for Heathrow. There are areas in Staines/Egham I wouldnt stay in. The majority is fine though.
I wouldn't move any closer to Heathrow, thats a given. Nothing particularity wrong with the other surrounding towns and villages, just 'content' is lacking. You may just find yourself driving back into Staines all the time. Transport into London may take much longer and trains less frequent. Staines is good as it seems to be one of the major stations, it right on Kingston Road as well.
Staines/Egham have quite a few big companies with many solo 'professionals' looking for 1 bed flats to rent through the week. I found these were grotty and over priced. There are plenty under 1k. You mght be lucky and get a good one. However good ones are few and far between. Spend that little bit more and you can have a great two bed flat.
Yes, you will get a bit more for your money elsewhere, but not having a commute was more important to me at the time. If you are only here monday to Friday initally I wouldnt want to spend any more time in the car than is required. I work beside people that commute up to 1.5 hours, screw that! Others are constantly checking the motorway's website to see if they can get home in a reasonable time...nah
Six months down the line, I'm finding Staines on the quiet side and looking to move closer to London. Richmond/Kingston ares possibly.
I'd do the same again though. Come down stay in a b&b, travel lodge, shared accommodation in Staines. its not gonna break the bank. suss out the area first before signing up to a lease and regretting it later.
I can put you in touch with a few places if you want.

Thank you for the link.
Google maps is indicating that the journey from Sunningdale to Staines will take 20 minutes (9.2 miles) along the A30. Does this road suffer from bad traffic at rush hour and roughly in rush hour how long will the journey take?
Thanks
I commute from Cambo to Bedfont (so includes that commute in my journey) every day, yes the A30 can have some bad traffic but once you live round here you can ask the locals for all the Google maps is indicating that the journey from Sunningdale to Staines will take 20 minutes (9.2 miles) along the A30. I wouldn't live any further in toward London than Staines.
Ascot/Sunningdale/Basghot/Cambo/Windlesham/VW/Egham are all lovely and you can easily find something in budget.

Good pubs aswell
I was surprised by Staines, and ended up buying there instead of Egham (our budget got us a decent 3 bed house in lovely road). I would recommend that you minimise your commute if you're going back up north at weekends, why waste money you could spend on toys etc? You going to be working at WGK?
Another Staines resident here.
Been living here for a couple of weeks (work in Staines). It's ok, not masses to do but there's a handful of pubs and a couple of bars. A few restaurants too.
Waterloo is 35 minutes on a quick train.
Motorway access is good, as is getting to LHR. Quite pleasant by the river too.
Renting wise I've got to echo the comments about 2 bed v 1 bed. When I was looking there were far more nice 2 beds available.
Watch out for the crooked billet roundabout here though. Got to go left to turn right - it's a bit of a nightmare!

I don't think I've ever managed it correctly. Do as the locals and just swerve across four lanes of traffic...Also Staines bridge roundabout is hilarious at peak hours, four cars wide merging into one lane. He who dares wins.
