I'm going to be doing a bit of a different commute for a few months which involves getting round Oxford. In the mornings I'll be doing A420 -> A40 -> M40 and the reverse in the evenings. Is it better to go north or south round Oxford? Mileage wise there's nothing in it so it comes down to traffic flow I guess. Any advice much appreciated!

I can only comment on the A420, but essentially... the earlier the better! I normally hit the A420 at around 6.45am and it's alright, but if I try it about 30 minutes later, it starts to become a bit more busy/annoying.

FWIW, I would go north/clockwise, there are less junctions/traffic lights/roundabouts that way. If I'm over that way though I'm always going in the other direction in the morning so this may be of limited use smile. Oxford is a ball-ache at the best of times so good luck.

Yep. I find going to work at odd hours is quite nice as I get to miss the awful traffic I experienced in my first couple of weeks!

Thanks gents smile

A quick look at Google maps last night proved invaluable and I did indeed go north around today due to the fewer amount of junctions etc. The whole thing was relatively painless even if the A420 was very busy. My little Clio 172 even managed 43 mpg which is a result! Even better is that it now looks like I'll not have to make the journey more than once a week as I can work from my existing office smile

That is the good thing about the A420 - good fuel economy, if you're sensible. I managed almost 60mpg the other day!
