Can anyone recommend a decent venue for a family party in or around Basingstoke? We're expecting somewhere around 120-150 people. Just to add an extra challenge we want to hold it on December 21st.

I definitely don't want to use the hotel chains. Someone mentioned a pub with a restored barn which sounds perfect but for the life of me I can't remember what it's called!!!!

Hope you can help
Regards
Doug

Well its not quite Basingstoke, about 20ish miles away but the Meade Hall (and Crown and Cushion pub next door) sounds like what you are talking about?

Capacity 150 people. right near jct 4a of the M3 as well so easy to get to

Is it Ok there these days? used to have a bit of a reputation in the past for trouble - car break ins, thefts etc by some of the local population

lol I heard you the first time!

Well I only live a couple of miles away and buy the local newspaper and cant recall reading anything recently about issues with the above there.

Having said that just checked the police crime website and there have been a number of vehicle issues there over the last year frown

I only ever have cycled there and then back (in a drunked stupor) across the army land there back to home so have never taken my car there

Agreed, Trunkwell is a great venue, but I don't think you'll be able to book there that late in December as they hold their Xmas parties throughout December.

It's definitely worth a phone call if you are flexible with the date though OP.

I don't anything about this place other than it looks a lovely venue.
Pit Hall Barn, 6 miles out on the main Basingstoke to Newbury road http://www.kingsclere-estates.co.uk/weddings.html

Ha I was about to post that same place!

I got married there 3 years ago. It's a great venue, and the owners are brilliant people to deal with.

It is just a venue though - you'd need to organise food/bar etc, although I think they can probably recommend some options. It was the only wedding venue we found where they didn't have a list of caterers/bar suppliers that you had to pick from.

Only other thing to be wary of is that it may be a bit cold in December - not sure what heating options they had.

Says on their site now that they have a list of caterers they can recommend, what did you do about bar/food ?

Ah they did have some people they could recommend, but they were the only people that didn't force you to pick from their 'recomended' list !

We went for a slightly less traditional approach:

Hog roast from these guys: http://www.nyama-hogroast.co.uk/
Couple of kegs of beer from: http://www.loddonbrewery.com/
Couple of kegs from: http://www.tuttsclumpcider.co.uk/

Seemed to work ok!
