The Mercedes one they are quoting for is probably the one that drops down when you pull a lever that is under the rear boot board - its very neat - I had one on my previous Merc estate - it was fitted when the car was built, so it was probably a lot cheaper than £2,000, at the time - 5 years ago, and it was a company car, so I don't remember.
On my current Mercedes estate, I had a removeable one fitted by RP Towing in Abercromby Avenue, High Wycombe. From memory, it was about £500-600, I think.

My old man is looking to get a tow bar fitted to his new Merc C-class estate. Can anyone recommend anywhere local to supply and fit at a good rate?
Ideally looking for a removable/hideaway style, although cost is more important - Merc quoted over £2k!

STAR Motor Services isn't too far from you so if you want the OEM version, you could try giving them a call and see if they can help? http://www.starmotorservices.com
I've had a couple of Tow-Bars fitted by http://www.alltowbarsreading.co.uk who are also close to you so that's another option to explore.
