Hi all.
Just had an email through about this scheme - I seem to remember it being discussed on here a while ago.

Looks like it's going to be a reality now.

If it stops the accidents that seem to happen on a regular basis on that stretch it could be a good thing smile

Although scrapping the hard shoulder in parts to relieve congestion in busy periods seems like another accident waiting to happen frown

However you just know that, like the M25 section past Heathrow, even when traffic is flowing fine at non peak times or at 6am in the morning, the gantry signs will be set to 50mph even though traffic is still flowing at 60/70mph.

Variable limits dont much bother me as driving large truck most of the time.

The concept of moving over and driving on the left hand when lane is clear would be usefull
fk knows what happens when something breaks down on the emergency lane as happens most days.
And the thought of a 44 ton artic heading towards rear end if your broke down stuck in that lane.

Also driver education to the basic methods of joining a motorway would be an advantage like getting up to speed and not expectiog vehicles to have to brake or move out of their way because they cannot look and adjust to the conditions.
As would giving some form of indication preferably in advance of diving from lane 3 off up the exit slip.

Get rid of the company car concept and perhaps Mr Rep Man might take the view that its His Insurance that take the hit and its His vehicle thats mullered awaiting Mr Recovery Man

Another waste of tax payers cash that will solve nothing.

We should all be able to maintain speed, distance and awareness without the need of electronic aids, but the plans to control the speed on the M3 as discussed in this plan, has to go ahead, regardless. The standard of driving is atrocious particularly when I see cars driving too close, too fast. I know this is an issue on every motorway in the UK, but speaking as a regular M3 user the amount of accidents I've witnessed over the years, with the increasing rate particularly when merging onto the M25, is a worrying statistic.

Although safety campaigners and a large proportion of motorists were against the M6 Birmingham stretch using the hard shoulder to relieve congestion, it has proven to be a success and it will soon become part of the UK motorway network. Unless I stand corrected, there hasn't been any fatalities caused by using this system. It has appeared to be safe and well controlled since it was introduced in 2011.

The M3 variable speed system will do its job, however, with the poor driving standards I very much doubt the 'repeated braking for no reason other than driving too close' isn't going to stop. But hopefully it will result in fewer accidents and whoever is for-or-against the idea, it has my vote.

Variable speed limits do fk all!!!

As a regular m25 user the speed only decreases when the traffic does and totally ignore the speed limit.

But variable speed cameras to match defo would! As would average speed cameras!

The problem with the M3, is it is carrying far too much traffic. I used to commute to Heathrow until 2001, and it is far far worse now. What's needed is widening,

Just to resurrect my old thread, I received an update for this today - the consultation period is open if anyone is interested in voicing their thoughts to the Highways Agency.

http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m3-...

http://www.highways.gov.uk/consultations/m3-juncti...

Looks like the project is going to take a year to complete (from spring next year) at an eye watering cost of between £148m to £230m......!!!
