Near reading, how about in Reading?

I'd start with the below:

Bel & The Dragon
Côte
Miller & Carter Steakhouse

Miller & Carter is terrible - avoid!

Also try The Greyhound at Peppard - Anthony Worrall-Thompson's place - does very good steaks

I don't agree, however I've had both good / excellent and okay steaks both there and Cote.

well anywhere that can serve an "okay" steak should not really be on a recommended list IMO smile

The Crown at Playhatch has some good steak and they can cook it well too.

Cheers for the suggestions! Should have added that we'd had one 'ok' and one not-so-ok meal at Miller and Carter.

Haven't been to Bel and Dragon for ages, had almost forgotten it was there.

Best steak in Reading's at the Costco meat counter. Go there; buy one; cook it. Simples

The French Horn is fantastic and what a wine list however if there was ever somewhere in desperate need of a rennovation, it's there...and if you're looking for a room to stay in, dont stay there. Carpet in bathroom; need I say more!!

I have to beg to differ I'm afraid. Best steak in Reading is from the Vicars Game farm shop in Ashampstead. Best meat you'll get this end of the M4.

As for restaurants, I liked the Hoggit and Hoof in Newbury, was bloody outstanding!

Not tried them but get a lot of produce from Lockey farm shop in Arborfield. Great quality but a tad expensive compared to Costco smile

I think the 70's Playboy/Porn decor is part of the charm!

Hoggit & Hoof in Newbury do a challenge:

72 oz rump, salad, chips. Consume within an hour and it's free. Fail and it's £50.

Is the Vicars game shop Ashampstead the same company as in Vicars butchers opposite Primarks in Reading ? who also own Sweeney and Todds (an old SAS PH hang out)just down from Reading police station.
Great stakes near Reading, try The Beatle and Wedge the other side of Streatly, lovely riverside setting as well

Not as far as I'm aware, I think the farm shop is their only retail outlet, as their main trade is supplying restaurants and hotels

I thought at least there must be link between them, and there is

"William Vicars and son was established in West Street, Reading in 1886 and traded in the same family for three generations as purveyors of English meat and game.
In 1973 the company changed hands and was bought by Alan Hayward, who subsequently opened a specialist game processing department (Vicars Game) in part of the old Reading abbattoirs. This then moved to Scours Lane and subsequently to Ashampstead seven years ago as a separate concern.
Meanwhile William Vicars and Son is still going strong in the town centre of Reading after 125 years"
