The Maultway - New 50mph Speed Limit
Discussion
Just a heads up for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but it appears that it's no longer NSL down the length of The Maultway any more. Haven't checked whether it stretches all the way down to Deepcut but it's definitely on the section between the Red Road & Jolly Farmer/American Golf r/bout.
Had wondered what the white truck parked up on the side of the road was doing when i went out earlier today, and on the way home noticed that there were a few newly uncovered 50mph signs stuck to the lamp posts.
Having a look on Surrey CC's website it looks like there may possibly be further speed reduction measures implemented during the year on the section after a review / monitoring of the average speed after the 50mph introduction.
Upper Chobham Road also appears to be on a list to be considered for a drop to 30mph, as is the Red Road proposed to 50mph.

Sigh. Don't necessarily disagree with the 30's (can't remember which one upper chobham road is), but the 50's annoy me.
Drive properly on the red road and most crashes would be avoided - people already crawl up there at 30-40mph which is frustratingly slow in general - and if you're going to hoon then a lower speed limit won't help - if you're prepared to break the NSL then you'll break a 50.
Is the Maultway that dangerous ??

To be honest I am suppried it was ever a NSL with all the side turnings and houses along there.
Reducing Red Road to 50 will not stop some drivers who are intent on going Off Road or overtaking by the junction.
I have many times come across drivers in the early hours on the wrong side
of the road, they seem to wake up when a 30 ton truck is coming along.

Theres a speed limit on the Red Road? But it's so much fun when you go faster on it.
I saw the Speed limit signs outside my house on the Maultway today, i can safely say that it will make no difference, if people are willing to do 70+ on it when it was an NSL they will still do 70+ on it now.

IMHO 60 feels fast especially where there are residential roads off it in places towards the American Golf end, I'm surprised it's been done before the Red Road though, which seems to be perceived as dangerous, but is fine if you slow for the corners
Having been to the Deepcut exhibitions, no doubt this will form part of DIO/SHBC 'road infrastructure improvements'Took a drive today and can confirm that the 50mph on The Maultway runs from American Golf, through the Red Road r/bout and all the way to the junction with the Old Bisley Road, where the speed limit has now been lowered to 40mph past the Army until the r/bout where it dropped to 30mph already.
Also noticed that they were starting to put the 50mph signs up in places on the Red Road as well today (well where they're able to on the few existing metal structures that exist), and it looks like that speed limit will run for the entire length of the road up to the other r/bout. At last check this afternoon though the NSL signs were still in place near the r/bout at the other end of the Red Road so at that time it was 50mph from Camberley to Lightwater, but 60mph if you were going back in the other direction
Upper Chobham is still 40mph from the Red Road r/bout past Cumberland Road, etc, though for the time being as those signs haven't been changed (yet).
Sadly though it would appear there are already the morons out there not able to adapt to the new limit. I don't mean speeding though, i mean the ones who only did 50 when it was a 60, are now only doing 40, because it's 50

The thing with speed limits, is that there are sections on roads where it's not safe to go at the speed limit. And there are sections where it is. Maybe only short sections, but still sections.
Unfortunately the mentality drivers are encouraged to take these days, means they are sheep and blindly follow their nose/bonnet and blindly stick to a speed regardless of hazards etc.
So stretches of the Maultway and Red Road are dangerous at 60 (or 50), but some bits are fine at 60 or beyond.
Added to this is people who drive like idiots and overtake in stupid places, but speed limits doesn't stop that - driver education might - hazard perception (junctions on corners on the Maultway going up to Deepcut for example). But of course education doesn't win votes and costs more.
One of the Conservative councillors who campaigns for red road safety - those annoying signs that light up etc., has a blog/web site where he talks about it. I even tried to comment on it (nothing rude or inflammatory) but he must moderate any comments that disagree with him

I Live in Maultway Crescent, and there have been numerous accidents where my road meets the Maultway which is on a dodgy bend.
I think 60 was a bit excessive, considering the A30 which is far bigger is mostly 50 now. I spoke to a councillor a while back and they mentioned they wanted to make it 40, but that would mean notices and alot more consultation. Where dropping it to 50 meant they could just do it.
Shall i observe it....mostly you have you anyway coz you are stuck behind a numpty
