Can you recommend a restaurant in/near Guildford?

It is my Dad's 80th birthday at the end of February and we're going to take him out for a meal. Nothing fancy, he doesn't really like 'foreign' food and we'd die of embarrasment anywhere posh as he hates that sort of thing and just plays up.

So a nice pub/restaurant with home cooked food where the welcome and service is really important, I want him to feel special. Pretty waitresses are a bonus as the old fart loves to flirt with them! Being able to ignore an 80 yr old Scouser's humour after a beer or two is also a bonus.

I lived in Guildford up until 2004, but I'm out of touch now. We'll be driving, so we're happy to go out to any of the surrounding villages.

Can you recommend somewhere? There is only 4 us going so we don't need catering for a large group.

I ate at The Seahorse in Shalford recently for the first time in many, many years and was seriously impressed.

Great surroundings; friendly, unpretentious service and good, uncomplicated food.

Other options would be The Olive Tree in Sutton Green or The White Hart in Pirbright.

Thanks everyone, some names I remember there. I may have to visit some at the weekend, purely research of course.

Anyone been to the Withies Inn recently? Last time I went the car park was full of nice cars, but thst was a long time ago.

Withies is nice yes. I go there once a month or so with friends and never had a complaint about the place. Lovely pub.

I live in Dorking so mostly near to me but do like the Wooton Hatch on the A24 between Dorking and Gildford.
