whats texas like??
Discussion
It's like a big US city Not a huge amount to do to be honest other than the usual tourist type stuff - Johnson Space Centre, Zoo, Museums etc., but venture out to Galveston or north to the Woodlands and there's plenty to explore - gun ranges, off-road parks, lake sports etc.etc.
Are you there on business or for pleasure (odd destination for the latter!).
Personally, I love it - but I have family there (Woodlands). Texans are great people and I admire their sense of independence.

I wouldn't go there on holiday. It's a bit 'mehh' overall, concrete everywhere, transport is essential, not a huge amount to see or do of interest once you've done the two or three worthwhile tourist bits.
Far nicer places in TX, but it's not particularly bad, just boring and soulless.

Everyone always says that the shopping here is great, but that is just because there is apparently so little else to recommend the city to a short-term visitor. It is the 4th biggest city in America, so it has a lot of shops...
As a place to visit, there are many, many other places in America I would go to instead. If you are considering moving here, it can be a fantastic place to live. If you are a family guy, there are excellent schools and living in a nice large house with a pool in a nice neighbourhood is very affordable indeed. It is relatively a very cheap place to exist so you will find that you have a lot of spare cash to do fun things with either here on on travels around America. It has great transport links with the outside world. It has many excellent and inexpensive restaurants; a decent arts and music scene; is very family friendly yet has a lot of nightlife too. Like any major city, it has high crime rates and some very impoverished neighbourhoods. It is very easy to get around the city by car, but has almost no public transport system to speak of and Taxis are few and far between. It helps to get off the beaten track to find the "real" city gems. Houston is big on sports (major teams in all mainstream sports) and recreations (lots of parks and sports clubs etc.). As others have said, interesting cities like Austin and San Antonio are close by, and Texas has fabulous scenery, history and culture.
I have lived here for nearly 5 years and am finding it hard to find a reason to leave...
