Hi everyone, this is my first post in this forum. I'm in the process of transferring to the US with my company to work in NY. My wife and I had our L1A/L2 visas arrive by courier yesterday after going through the application and interview process at the Embassy. We arrive on the 13th December. Really looking forward to it!

Unfortunately as we are going to be living in NYC, it's probably pointless for me to have a car of my own so I'll be looking to get my petrolhead fixes another way!

Anyway, that's the intro over with!

Cheers

Iain

Congratulations, and good luck with the move. I got here in March this year, absolutely loving it, I have no intention or desire to ever go back to the UK.

I too am moving to NYC in Jan...wanted to keep a car, as I love having a car even though I live in central London. However of all the things it appears garage space/parking is prohibitive if you live in manhattan...
Looking at classic car club and they have a great range in NYC so might check that out as an interim fix...

Driving in Manhattan is a very different prospect to driving in Central London (I lived in Wapping next to Tower Bridge). As you say, parking is almost non existent, you can easily pay a few hundred $ per month for a space in an apartment block. More importantly the roads are like the surface of the moon, they make London roads look billiard table smooth. Your car would have shot suspension / bent rims in no time at all. Stay with public transport, and rent yourself something interesting when you need it, or as you say join a car club.

Zipcar, a car sharing plan, has a strong presence in Manhattan, when we lived in the city it was a very useful option for short term access to a car. Car rental is very expensive in the city, so much so that friends will often get a train to Connecticut, or New Jersey (depending on final destination) and rent in these states and save large.

Welcome to NY, I have been here since 1996 and still get a buzz out of working in the city.

Always been a NY commuter; monthly for business; living there is going to be great, cars have always been a source of enjoyment so living without my "own" is going to be tough!!

Unless you actually live in the bottom half of Manhattan, you may find you need a car.

Even if it just for picking up the groceries.
Eating out.....Two taxis?

6 Months you'll have a car.

That's not entirely true. You can have everything delivered, including groceries, for next to nothing and should do. I have friends who have not had cars for 20 years.

I do have a car but I need it for work. I also live in Hoboken so that I can go to work. If I lived in the the city there is no way I would have a car.
