Virginia to Florida road trip
Discussion
Hi,
Considering the option of visiting a friend in Virginia (Danville area) before a business trip to Orlando later this year. One option is to get a rental car from someone like Hertz in at one end of the trip and drop it back at the other. What do people think?
Specifically, how long will it realistically take (if I'm going to see a little bit of the country along the way)?
Is it worth doing? I haven't spent much time in the States and I'd love to see a bit more of it, but it would have to be a reasonably interesting journey to justify doing it by car rather than jumping on a plane.

One way rental could smack you in the wallet a bit - but it is easy to do, with a couple of interesting route alternatives.
If you thumped it you could do it in 2 days - 3 would be more fun.
Coastal suggestion would be:
Danville VA
Raleigh NC - nice non-touristy, real America
Myrtle Beach SC - Young party town
Charleston SC - Historic Civil War fortress town
Hilton Head Island SC - awesome golf, sea fishing etc
Savannah GA - Gorgeous antibellum town
Jax FL - don't stop here - no siree
St Augustine FL - Wonderful architecture - deep spanish history
Daytona Beach FL - Speedway
Blue Ridge suggestion:
Danville VA
Charlotte NC - NASCAR Hall of Fame
Spartanburg SC - Smokey Mountains
Stone Mountain GA - Confederate "Mt Rushmore" - Athens GA close by
Atlanta GA - Awesome Capital of the South - Buckhead is a great night out
Valdosta GA - Cotton Belt history
Gainesville FL - Don Garlitts Drag Racing Museum
Don't leave it too late in the year - you could run into crappy weather over the Blue Ridge.
Either would be a real experience and you'd get to see some real America too.

Last night I was talking to one of the guys who organises the Petrolhead Nirvana tours and he mentioned that taking a rental car one-way could incur a huge cost. Hmm. Will get some quotes, but I might just get an internal flight - boring but simple.
The thing is I'd have to schedule it to tie in with the PRI show in Orlando, which starts on the 9th of December, so the weather could be an issue. On the other hand it would add to the sense of travelling if I started off in snowy Virginia and finished in sub-tropical Florida!
