How many Ex Pat Brit's are there here? Where are you? when did you come? why did you come? etc

I've been here 15 going on 16 years. I came to S.E. Mi to work in the auto industry for 6-12 months. I never intended to stay, but I'm here to stay. I'm now a Citizen and love it.

What are your stories?

I'm not an ex-pat, but my parents emigrated 30 years ago and I've been every year (sometimes twice) since. My father became a citizen about 20 years ago, and died 5 years ago. Why didn't I follow them? I have a very comfortable life here, and have never seen the need. If I were younger and less comfy, I'd have gone too.

Moved to New York City just over 4 months ago. Work in downtown Manhattan and live in Brooklyn. Am loving the place.
Thought I could go 'cold turkey' and avoid pistonheads completely after selling the Elise and accepting I won't own one whilst in the US...now back on here wondering what petrolheads based in the US do for motorsport kicks!

Still here.

Moved to NYC just under 2 years ago. It was Mrs CVP's job that brought us here but the company she worked for hired me too and did all the visa paperwork for both of us. Now only one more year of assignment to go before we decide what to do. Have really enjoyed our time so far and we are planning to have 3 months off at the end of our assignment and travel more around the US.

Tig6 - we are currently living in Brooklyn too, so if you fancy meeting up for a beer drop me an email.

Came over here in 1994 for a "short secondment" and ended up staying. Boy meets girl thing wink

Moved over here permanently in 1998, and never looked back. I live in Illinois just west of Chicago so it is pretty flat and the roads are soooooaaaaa straight. That probably the only thing I miss - decent scenery, and some decent driving roads - too damn flat.

I spend a fair amount of the year in Tampa Florida, but spend 2-3 months a year in the UK. I came over with work (sports marketing) was sponsored by my employer and enjoy both lives, by the beach and back in London.

Left Scotland in July 2008, loving it here in sunny San Diego (rainy at moment though!) and have no desire to return to the UK whatsoever.

Got my green card in October 2009, got a Toyota Tundra 5.7 V8 Pickup truck in December, love it !!

Reason for moving was my fiancee is American and there's simply a better selection of jobs available to pay off student loans!

I'm also trying to get into an electrical apprenticeship with a view towards heavy industrial/commercial design & build.

I do miss things about the UK but so far I've experienced good things about the USA to keep me here.

Moved out in 2002 after I got my PhD. Spent 2 years in San Diego, then 4 in Lexington, KY, and moved to DC last March. For all the country's faults, there's not many other places I'd want to live now, including the UK.
