Going to Springfield at the end of Dec for a family party. Will be there for 20 days or so with hire car, anything for a PH car nut to do so I don't have to listen to the outlaws all the time?
May go don to Houston Tx at some point as well.

You could vist St. Louis or Chicago.

Take warm clothing - be prepared to see as low as 0 Farenheit.

Chicago is about a three to three and a half hours drive from Springfield, but well worth it. Make your way to downtown Chicago to see the animated story windows on State Street. Also make sure you visit the "Magnificent Mile" which is Michigan Avenue with lots of must see Christmas decorations. Your OH will LOVE the stores. Water Tower is a must see and do as well. The indoor mall, not the landmark!! smile

Oh, you asked about things to do in Springfield? NOTHING!!!

All of this "stores" lark sound seriously damaging to me & my wealth! biggrin

Thanks for this though, no museums or anything regarding transport or similar in the area?

Absolutely the best museums... we're still talking about
Chicago, not Springfield. Museum of Science and Industry a bit south of downtown. Museum of Natural History, Field Museum, Planetarium and the Art Institute all downtown Chicago. Let me check with my son (who lives there) about guy and car stuff that would tickle your innards! As someone mentioned, winters are brutal and salt is used to tame the snow and ice, so a lot of "toy" cars become garage princesses for the winter. Food: Giordanos (or Uno's or Due's) for the best pizza, Miller's Pub for a great dining experience. You also should have an option to take the Amtrak train into Chicago. Parking rates are brutal but the public transportation is excellent. HTH

Try and get up the John Hancock building for a meal or drink, but only if you don't mind heights, also if you do make it to Chicago visit this as its only an hours drive north.
