Temporary Car Import into USA Question
Discussion
Did a search but surprisingly did not find an answer from before.
I am deciding whether to move to Fl, US for a 2 year secondment. Its a company move and my question is a simple one, I want to bring my car with me (from CH). I know transport costs etc but what are the regulations or is there a website / contact anyone knows?
I will also be in Palm Beach area, any good websites for house rental to give me an idea what I can get for the allowance?

I beleive it's one year and re-export.

I did this (from UK though) in 2002. The biggest hassle is insurance because it isn't an FL titled/tagged car. Insurance companies have a tough time getting their brains around this concept, because it is done so infrequently. I got around it by having the car covered by a blanket company insurance policy.
You can only use the car for 1 year, without re-titling and tagging through the FL DMV. After that it must be re-exported or scrapped.
Switching the title was reasonably straightforward for me because it was an American car, so the inspection was only a case of verifying the VIN. I suspect it could have been a bit of a ball-ache, had it been a non-US vehicle (Lights, lenses, bumpers, emissions etc). The only cost was sales tax on the estimated value of the car at the time of inspection and the title and tag fees.

I was wondering this myself after finding this site. I see a lot of bikes I would like and wondering how you would import them. Can Japanese imports even be registered in the States? In Europe you guys get access to all the best of what each manufacturer has to offer. They send the garbage over here to the States. Even our home market companies export the better vehicles.
Thanks for the info, I know now it will not work for the whole time. Just paid a lot for my car 2 years ago (new) and it would be a shame to leave it standing for 2 years. Selling it is the obvious option, but the money I'd loose, boo hoo.
I'll think about a one import, then export back and store for a year and just put the loss in the whole "should we move" equation.
ps. The search idea worked a treat and I found good links to the US websites that explain everything.

Perhaps you should put the cost of buying the same car, same mileage in the US into the equasion too.
Fair comment. SOOOO my x5 2007, 3.0D, 20K km value to sell (in CH) is 60KCHF that's about 50KUSD. Any ideas on the cost to by a 2 year old x5 3.0i or 4.8? I think petrol simply as I know diesel in the states for cars is not so easy/clean/normal. Carmo99 said:

Ok,
where is CH?
And in a similar vein, who ships vehicles from the UK to the USA and how much will it cost? Thinking of taking my GMC Typhoon to there for about 1 year.
A 40" ISO will be $9000 approx so that's a no go.....
Thanks in advance!
