There is quite a lot of 'not-much-to-see' on the obvious route.
I'd recommend Cedar Point coaster park, at Sanduskey OH if white knuckles are your thing. Following that route, the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland OH is interesting. However, everything else about Cleveland is piss-poor/dangerous (known as 'The Mistake by The Lake').
I have to say that I was a little 'underwhelmed' by Niagra Falls - not as big as I had imagined and a bit tacky. It's a honeymoon destination of old and it's a bit tawdry. Toronto ON is a great, great city. Absolutely love the place.
I'd be tempted to deviate from the obvious route at this point and head up to Ottowa/Montreal, rather than driving around the lake and heading south into NY. Quebec is pretty and Montreal is a beautiful, culture filled city. The drive south from Quebec to MA through Vermont and New Hampshire is very pleasant and rural, if you stay off the Interstate.
Weather should be bang-on, verging on 'phew, what a scorcher', with quite high humidity in July.
Have fun - and be careful in Cleveland.

If you're going from Chicago to Niagara Falls then you ought to strongly consider going through Detroit, crossing at the bridge or tunnel in Detroit after getting your Duty Free, and then through Canada to Niagara.

When you're in Detroit there are a number of things worth doing. I would consider stopping in Dearborn and spending a day in "The Henry Ford" museum & Greenfield Village, also the Automotive Hall of Fame right next door to that. You could stay in the Dearborn Inn which is a Marriott Hotel just down the road from there (400 yards). There are a number of impromptu motoring events. Cruise up Woodward Avenue in the Royal Oak & Birmingham suburbs on a Friday or Saturday night and you will see all sorts of machinery out cruising or at the side of the road watching others cruise by. You may want to look at events at Meadowbrook Hall where concerts & a renowned concours is held. Concerts are also held there but the big names go to DTE Energy Music Theater or The Palace at Auburn Hills. You might want to take in a baseball game at Comerica Park.

I would look at staying in casino hotels en-route. In Detroit you have the MGM Grand, Motor City & Greektown casinos. There is also the Caesar's Windsor literally across the river in Canada. Caesar's gets some big name entertainers so that might work out well for you.

In Niagara on the Canadian side there are also lots of Casino hotels that may be worth looking at.

Hope this helps.

If you like seafood go to Shaws Crab House when you are in Chicago. If you like oysters and soft shell crab (or any seafood TBH) you won't want to leave. If you are at all interested in architecture it's worth going to Oak Park to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright house and to walk around the area and see some great examples of his work. Downtown Chicago is great.

If you do get to downtown Chicago, then a good spot for lunch and people watching is 'The Tavern on Rush' on the junction of N Rush & E Bellevue, great atmosphere and excellent food. Shopping on Michigan is great too. Where are you staying?

When in Chicago, DO NOT miss Lou Malnati's Pizza.

The direct route from Chicago - Boston is 80/90 East to just east of Cleveland where 90 Splits off and runs out to Boston.

This is the direct route. This is also a route where there's nothing to see. Cleveland has the ROck and Roll museum, that's all I can think of to do in Cleveland. Further up the road is, well, Erie, PA and Buffalo and Syracuse and Rochester and Albany and Springfield Mass.

If you're coming from TOronto, I would hit Cooperstown NY on your way to NY City (Baseball hall fo fame in Cooperstown, failing that, just hit up NYC)

From NYC-Boston make sure you go the back way to avoid traffic.. 87N Out of NY City to the Cross County Parkway to the Hutchinson River Parkway to 684 to 84 east. 84 east runs into the Mass Pike (I-90) and heads right into Boston.
