Myself and some mates are looking into going on a sightseeing/driving holiday across the states next summer

Which is a good route to take?

Should we get a package holiday, or book car hire, flights, hotels etc ourselves?

How much is this going to cost per person?

A group of seven of us did San Diego to NY in the spring - great driving roads throughout and some stretches of Route 66 too. Can tell you more if interested. There are loads of sites out there with routes and suggestions, but I just spent a few weeks with mapquest picking towns I'd heard of and googling nearby places for ideas. Switch to google earth to check out the terrain for the best roads.

I bought a car and drove it across (I live in the US) but my UK mates hired a Vette and a Mustang one way. I'll find out more about the cost of that, but for hotels/food bank on $100-150 per day depending on your eating and drinking habits each and how many you want to share a room (also depends upon eating and drinking habits). Do it - great fun!!

If you are going to drive cross-country I would try to go through southern Utah and drive through Zion National Pak as well as Bryce Canyon National Park. Spectacular scenery / great roads. Sequioa and Yosemite are nice also. Grand Tetons in Wyoming are cool, and the lakes are beautiful near there. You would be surprised how small Mount Rushmore is if you go there. On the eastern side, the state roads in north Georgia and western North Carolina are the most fun to drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is probably the most scenic and fun for a relaxing winding route from North Carolina to Virginia. I'd try to fit that in and maybe end around NYC.
Good luck, it is definitely a worthwhile trip to make.
Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado are the most boring to me.
