Im going to be visiting the US end August/beginning September and am planning to drive from LA to Las Vegas.

Does anyone know of any car hire firms that don't charge a min $25/day excess for drivers under 25? I've checked all of the big firms and it seems they all do this, so was just wondering if anybody knows of any that don't charge/charge a lesser daily rate etc..

I want to pick the car up at LAX and return it to Las Vegas airport if that makes any difference

Also anybody done this drive?

TIA

I am 24 at the moment and have been renting cars in the US for a few years. I have not found a firm that does not charge yet but have stuck with the major firms because you know wear you stand (i belive) Alamo have been brill when getting blow outs in death vally and the like. holiday autos may be worth a look. so companies may charge for dropping out of state, insulting as most of the cars on offer are from out of state anyway.
as for the drive enjoy it i do. pick up the 15 and by Barstow the signs are up with the distance up far bigger than you imagine in the UK.
i will be doing the trip at a similar time not sure which day i am driving out but will be heading back sat 30th aug for pepsi 500 in LA on the sunday.

I posted this thread in TP&P also and someone suggested carhireagency.com. I've been on and they offer a young drivers insurance package, this costs £101 for 10 days and does away with the $25/day excess. This is on a mustang convertable through Budget and gives cover for 4 drivers under 25 and a free tank of fuel - £365 all in, so i'm going to give this ago..

I plan to be in LA 27th August for 4/5 days. I didn't know the Pepsi 500 was on that Sunday, will def go to that..where is the best place to get tickets?

Also where would you suggest staying hotelwise to be close to the nightlife etc?

Cheers

i think you can still get tickets from the california sppedway website.
there are a few car bits around that time. bonniville speedweek (a long drive to be fair) pebble beach concourse and IRL @ infineon.
as for LA its my Detox place stopping with freinds! i perfer san diego both downtown and mission beach for night life. that said you can not really go wrong with any of the LA beach towns ;-)
