Any of the US contingent got any views on the prices of MkIV VW R32's? According to autotrader there are only a couple of hundred for sale in the country and the prices range from $30k plus to $20k plus. I am going to see a cheaper one tomorrow - one of only 2 for sale within a couple of hundred miles! The prices seem incredibly strong for 2-3 yo cars that were only mid $30k's new! I suspect that it may be difficult to shift them though. I'm not sure what sort of image they have in the US. I had been looking at new GTi's (which are similar money) and the dealer mentioned that most of them are black 'cos "thats how the kids like them"! As a father in my early 30's, perhaps a fast VW is unseemly??? Is the new R32 coming to the states? Am I likely to take a bit of a bath over three years if I buy in at low $20k?

Also, does the US work the same as the UK has done recently regarding warranties, in that if the vehicle has not been dealer serviced the warranty may not be honoured?

Thanks!

Dave

In Michigan for sure, and I think pretty much the whole USA, there is a legal obligation to honour warranty claims even if the car has had oil changes at a non-dealer shop e.g. Jiffy Lube, provided they put the correct stuff in.

I think that there have been some issues with this on diesel VWs, where the only oil recommended is a special formulation that you can only get from dealers, and priced highly.

HOWEVER...
VW give free servicing for the first two years including the cost of oil so I would think that most newish cars are dealer serviced.

Thanks Gavin - the car has never seen a VW dealer since the day it left the showroom, but it has apparently been serviced and oil changed regularly. I need to see some documentation though!

From what I gather, there's a shedload of problems with trying to get one into the US. As a result, they're pretty rare.

They may well change with the new one though!
