Just moved to LA

OK, i just moved from Nottingham,UK to LA and wow its crazy. Im carrying out an internship at an investment bank in Century City and actually start on Monday. Im just posting to see if anyone has any tips on how to make the most of my time here. I will be here until mid June next year so i have plenty of time to see everything etc.
I know soccer(or football in England) isnt that popular in the US but ive signed up to a team in this random league. If the team wins they get $6000 shared between every player. Seeing as my internship is unpaid, this would be awesome.
So if there are any LA people on here it would be good to hear from you.

Yeah LA is pretty cool so far. Now ive started work though, the week days are more or less taken up almost totally as i work sometimes 6 till 6. How did you get arounf LA because you really need a car to go places here. Also how was it when you started your internship, like how long did it take to settle down into the job? Ive only been working for three days now but i like to know what i should be feeling like at the moment to make sure im not doing anything wrong etc.

The best advice i could give is find your local pub, and chat to the ex pats who live nr you. I got a car when i was out there, but the bus service is not to bad, but at night......its a big NO, NO.
What part of town are you in?
As for how you should be feeling, for me it never felt like home, thats not to say it wasnt an amazing time of my life.
You will find the lads in the pub have all been at the point you are at now, and most will be glad to help you find your feet.

Christian - I didn't live in LA, but spent 6 yrs in San Francisco, and like you, went out there on my own (age 26). Being realistic, you will have some tough/shite times ahead, when you miss home and question your reasons for being there. However - I set myself a minimum 1 yr time span, and no matter how shitty it got, I wanted to stick it out, simply because I wanted to see what could come of it and so as to not make a rash decision and return.
In retrospect, it was a wise call, as after a couple of months, I started to meet people through work - sometimes being more forward than normal in trying to establish new friends/contacts - and started to want to explore more and make the most of the place. Some 6 yrs later, I was close to remaining there for good. LA, California and the US in general has so very much to offer in terms of experiences that you will kick yourself if you make a quick decision based on initial - albeit understandably tough - experiences. Go easy and congratulate yourself on having the balls at going out there.

Yeah im at Merrill in Century City offices in LA. Working in Wealth Management. I just finished my first week and must say i have learnt a lot already and it was essentially only an induction week. Im only 20 so by far the youngest person there but an early insight into this industry can only be beneficial for me.
I have had second thoughts on being here for a year, but as you said, i must gove it time and not just give up straight away. As you said it also takes some balls to come out on your own for a year and work in totally new environment. Im meeting people through various ways and the American people are all very helpful.
Plus the girls love the accent.
Anyway thanks for your comments, it reasures me to hear that someone else has gone through more or less the same as what im going through now and they got through well.

100% right.
We found it difficult at first moving here, especially with me having to find work in a part of the world completely different to where we lived before - not too many international newspapers to work for around here, but we made it stick and are very pleased we did, it certainly has made us grow up and toughen up a bit too.
It sounds like you've got a good thing going there at such a young age - best of luck

I live in the UK but I have family in California and my cousin is Nick Webster, the Fox Sports "Soccer" commentator. He might not be a car nut but he is a huge Gerry Marshall fan and when my droop snoot comes out racing next season ('07) it will have Fox sponsorship and most people in the UK will think "what the f***!!" but hopefully it'll help him out a bit as much as it helps me.
Anyway, he is a huge footie fan and loves meeting up with people from the UK, so drop him an e-mail (Nicholas.Webster@fox.com) and say I sent you (so to speak), but you'll probably see his cheesy grin on Fox anyway!!

Thats a nice summary of LA...erm, LA. But I bet you a toffee apple that the the fish and chips aren't the same!
One day hopefully I will be able to spend some time over there, I have relatives in SD and everytime I've been over I've loved it and wanted to stay there. Haven't been back since 2003 I think, and that was to Boston not San Diego.

Ive been here for over 2 months now. It does get better every day. I made some brilliant friends from around the world. If you guys know the bar Chinawhite in London, im very good friends with a joint owner of it and some other clubs in London. As for work its hard, like 630-6 everyday however im working for one of the best wealth management teams in the world, so i dont mind working for them.
LA really is very interesting, but it has no character like Paris, London or most other European cities. Its all flashy bollox which is cool as long as you know how to get away from it all. The beaches are best for this, Malibu especially. Plus the chicks are awesome here, they all want to make themselves look nice and model like, which is fine by me.
Oh and 'Los Angeles', ive been to Kings Head a few times. One of very few places where they serve Carlsberg draft. It tastes glorious everytime i go there.
'Boobles', yes im a Forest fan, but hate Derby. The reds are doing really good so far, apart from the recent shicking loss on Sky Tv.
Anyways once again thanks for the replies etc. I appreciate all the postings. If anyone happens to pop in to LA for whatever reason i would be happy to meet up for a drink. Ive made some good friends in the top places so that makes life here even better.

No i'm not a derby fan, its WEST BROM for me !!! I loved the Kings head pub also the old ship in fullerton is a good one. if you get a chance, go to the state fair, it is a great day out, you will see all kinds of stuff there.
