Thinking about moving to the US
Discussion
I have always wanted to emigrate to the US and whilst on holiday in Orlando a few years ago I decided to ask a police officer I saw wandering around (who funnily enough turned out to be Scottish!) how to go about it... he said basically I had two hopes - the first is to go in as a nurse... cant handle blood n guts in the flesh so thats a non starter, and the only other way would be to marry someone.
Anyone have any better suggestions (although a husband would be lovely

There was a thread on this in Pie and Piston a few weeks back, it would be worth searching for (found it: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=141&t=254719&h=0 there are some other threads on similar stuff aswell). Basically your best hope is to have your company transfer you to their US operation (which is what happened with me and the wife). Even then, depending on the sort of work you do and what level you are at, they will also have to make a case to prove that they need to import you as no American can do the job. The level of visa you are eligible for makes a difference, take a look at the US embassy site. It's not an easy process.
Many jobs Stateside I've seen advertised through UK channels stipulate that UK candidates need to have work permission sorted out before applying, they won't sponsor you over. To get a work visa without a job is very very difficult I believe.
Like your policeman friend said, best to be a nurse or doctor or some other professional in which the Americans are short.
I think the UK is part of the Green Card lottery programme, but your hopes of getting one of them are located somewhere between Bob Hope and no hope.
If I were you I'd pursue two lines of approach. 1. Join as many US-based web dating agencies as possible or 2. get a one-way ticket to Mexico and take some spending to buy a spade.

Hmm... well as I work for the police I dont think they can transfer me...
Dating site... hmmm I think they'd notice I was trying to move over there and steer well clear.
But thanks for your assistance in any case. I will keep searching.
Maybe I need a new job??!! I am a great secretary (but I guess my spelling over there would be a bit shot!)... but then anyone can be cant they!

Regrettably not - UK/China and some other countries noted in the attached link are excluded on the basis that they have issued >50k visas in the year. Given that the UK has been in that position for as long as I can remember (at least 5/6 years), I would be very surprised if this changes.

Remember also - even if you get the green card, there are firm stipulations as to being away from the US thereafter. Best of luck if you do find a way - best decision I ever made and thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
Hmm... I'm not a police officer, I just tell em what to do...
And yes, I did see that we are not eligible for the lottery this year... and probably the next few years to reading the comments!
Thank you all and keep suggestions coming! And if you know of any lovely single guys lookin for an English rose... well, wife in any case, let me know

I work in dispatch... I tell em what to do and take 999 calls.
Would they take a Brit though?? I would certainly love to take a job like mine over there!!
And I have secretarial qualifications which means I can be a secretary too... although I dont know whether they would be recognised over there... RSA Qualifications...

Regarding the idea of emigrating to the US.
Lovely idea, but having lived there for some years, without successfully winning a Green Card lottery, or the real lottery for that matter! I was reliably told by an imigration lawyer that my only chance of Green card was to marry a US citizen. So that is the best simplest way.
However,in the corse of my work, Overseas Property Consultant, I was in Newfoundland, Canada (Beautiful place) and was tlod that emigrating to there was far simpler than migrating to anywhere else in Canada, partly because it was Britsh until about 50 years ago, and the government is encouraging migration.
Now, once you ahve Canadian citizenship, you can move anywhere in the country. Arguably beeter than the US. but restrictions on Canadians living in the US. are much less than for other nationalities......
It's a thought.
