More information from a VIN of a USA car

Hi,
I recently purchased a car that was imported to Australia from the USA several years ago but don't have any info on the car from its time in the USA.
Just wondered the best way to get more information about a car from the VIN, etc (preferably free if its not too detailed)?
I was surprised that googling the VIN had no search results.

I have an old US car in Aus and it didn’t take much to break it all down, US marque-specific forums always a wealth of info.
