Yes I stayed while on a roadtrip in March and it was sweltering with the heat so there's that. The locals as far as I could see are a bit touched but in a good way. I honestly loved the place. What age is he ? It's very redneck so loads of beer and good food it was great

Somewhat vague info request - Alabama is bigger than England, so it would be helpful to narrow it down a bit.

But generally it is 'southern-sticky' in the Summer, still highly dependent on agriculture, so a little impoverished, very, very god-fearing. Birmin'ham is dull - Tuscaloosa (University town) is much more lively.
US Space & Rocket Center at Huntsville is interesting, but is in the far north of the state, surrounded my not much else.
USS Alabama is a state designated memorial park, moored in Mobile AL and is highly impressive - Mobile is a fun town too, as long as you stay on the right side of the tracks.
Talladega Superspeedway has a big 500 mile NASCAR race in the fall - and "Roll Tide" naturally.

There's this place called Nowhere and Hanceville is right in the middle of it.

Do make sure he carries his banjo on his knee.
