PCH, Landslide at Big Sur ?
Discussion
I've just heard about a landslide at Big Sur blocking the PCH. We are doing a tour round California in September. Part of our route is traveling up the PCH through Big sur to Pebble Beach.
Doesn't look like a five minute job, so may have to use different route, if it's not cleared in time. Alternative routes or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I spent a good two hours looking at this yesterday. We had been planning to driver up PCH and Hwy 1 from LA to SF this summer.
Bottom line: you're fked.

There are currently three sections of Hwy 1 wiped out by mudslides. Estimated fix dates are 30 June. Estimated.
Apparently they're had a lot (relatively) of rain lately and it's causing a fair few mudslides. There was one in the news about a week ago that took out a 1/4 mile of road and redefined the coastline. Hence why I say "estimated".
But the killer is the double hit just south of Monterey. There are two bridges out - beyond repair - and that section won't re-open until September. The diversion around them is about 250miles apparently.

We've decided to head from LA to Yosemite instead then onto to SF. Real shame.

Ditto for me in early July
.
Looks like to do as much as is possible is down to past Bixby Bridge and then backtrack to pick up the connecting road to 101. Then to the junction that takes you to Lucia AND IF it is open down to Cambria on1! then off to Fresno, Back up plan is straight to Cambria and them as far up as possible and backtrack

We will have already done SF, Yosemite and Death Valley. The last part of your trip was the PCH. Looks like we'll just have to dip in and out of it. But you never know it could be sorted by September.Bottom line: you're fked.

It now looks unlikely the PCH will be open for the beginning of September. We were planning on driving up Highway 1 from Pismo Beach to Monterey, now looking for alternative and interesting routes . I know we will need to use the 101 at some point. But a more scenic route would be preferred.
OK
Did this in July
Stayed overnight in Seaside ( about 50 miles inland!!!!) and did the 17mile drive... worth to 10 dollars fee./. Onto Highway 1 as to south of Bixby Bridge, and then back to Monterey and took the G16 ( great road to drive but 45 limit mostly!!) via Carmel Valley o the 101 at Greenfield. Down the 101 to Paso Robles then across to Carmel and up to ragged point. backtracked and off to Fresno
left Seaside about 08.30 and took a break in Cambria for about 45mins. 45 mins at the elephant seals and got to Fresno about 20.00 without belting it at all
