Will be stopping in Vegas for 48 hours on my way to New Zealand around new years eve. Day 1 I want to hire a car and check out grand canyon. Pretty sure I can figure that out for myself. Then back to Vegas and tick the tourist boxes. Just wondering if there's anything automotive wise worth checking out - museums, shops with shiny go fast stuff or motorsport to watch. Not planning on any of the 'drive an indy car for 2 minutes' type experiences unless they are truly awesome and sensibly priced.

Welderup are based there, not sure what they have in terms of visiting but it would be worth a check

There is a fairly good car museum in one of the casino's that's good for an hour or two. Not sure which one. I went to Vegas for a few days in 2004 on my way to Fiji, so a similar thing to you. The (now ex) wife and I also did an ATV/4 wheeler experience in the Red Rock Canyon for about half a day. Brilliant fun. We were there around September time I think. It was a bit of a drive out there in a mini bus. Well organized, packed lunch included, helmet etc. Some great blasts through the dunes etc. It was actually quite tiring if you are not used to it, but overall well worth looking into. Some great scenery.

You'd be advised to check the weather status at Grand Canyon before you leave LV as snow is common at that time of year.

Be aware that the North rim of the Grand Canyon is already closed. It's a 4-5 hour drive and you go past the Hoover Dam on the way which is great to drive across.
ATV's are advertised everywhere in Vegas, but I would book in advance as you don't want to waste time when you are there. You can hire all sorts of cars. We just took a standard rental for 10 days for less than $300 including all fuel costs and 893 miles smile

The Linq Hotel has a 250 car display on the 5th Floor. Richard Petty Driving Experience is amazing fun if you have time and like Nascar. Also check on teh Cars and Coffee website for meets in Vegas.
