Has anyone here had a holiday in San Diego? The OH and I are thinking of it as one of our options for a break in October. Is there loads to do there? Is it friendly? Is it a good holiday destination? Or, will we wish we'd gone somewhere more 'obvious' like LA or SanFran?

Yes, there's lots of stuff to do. What are you interested in doing? There are also some fantastic driving roads in the area.

Why not try to see the very best of SD, LA and SF, then go back to any one single place if you really like it?

We were wanting something pretty laid back and walkable. LA needs a car and, from what I've heard, is not the kind of place where I'd want to have my first experience of sitting on the 'wrong' side of the car and driving on the 'wrong' side of the road! From what the OH tells me SF is walkable, but she was fancying somewhere she's never been.

Holiday in SD?

Laidback, check.
Plenty to do, check.
Good weather, check. Normally it oscillates between good and very good, I have seen Octobers which were like the peak of summer.

Walkable? Really depends where you are. Where are you thinking of staying?

Downtown is walkable but I would not recommend it as a place to stay. I live a mile away and never go there.

I am assuming that you want to be close to the sea? Good opportunity to get surfing!

PB will be overrun by drunken kids, not as bad as in summer, but still bad.
Downtown La Jolla (not UTC...) is nice and walkable. Encinitas should be good too.

Other areas to consider which are walkable would include Hillcrest and Little Italy, but that is further from the beaches, more urban.

It will be very different from SF. Much more laidback. Like a really large village actually, rather than a city like SF. It is good for a vacation, actually people come to SD for vacation from all over the US. It is advertised as a holiday resort.
Not comparable to LA in my view. LA is not a nice place, IMHO, and not somewhere I would go for vacation. Especially if you like walkable areas...

I have been living in SD for the last 5 years, so don't hesitate if you have any questions!

Loved San Diego when I was there a few years ago.... here's the relevent section of my trip report:

You should also take a trip to Hearst Castle, it's probably the best thing I did on that entire 3 week trip.
