Hi,

I will be in LA for a few weeks mid July and then in San Diego from the end of August this year and am interested in doing a really involved, thorough performance driving school whilst there, probably San Diego better as I will be there for longer. I'm not fussed about driving the flashiest or the quickest, I'm after the top instructors, with solid results. I've done a little trawling and Skip Barber comes up but I would really appreciate any help from those who have done a course or know the ones that really cut the mustard.

Thanks very much for any help.

Not sure if there's anything at all in San Diego - there didn't appear to be when I lived there a few years ago, and the nearest track was Buttonwillow which was still north of LA. Might be better to do Skip Barber at Laguna Seca or possibly the Simraceway school at Sonoma/Infineon and just factor in the $150 it'll cost to fly up north?

While you're in San Diego, don't miss the opportunity to check out some truly amazing driving roads. Palomar Mountain has what ought to be considered the US Nurburgring:

It's better to head up South Grade and down East Grade, and the last time I was there (Feb 2011) the road surfaces were a bit deteriorated in places, but it really is epic.

There are a few other interesting roads on this google map

Highway 74 (the Palms to Pines Highway) is also well worth a drive: http://www.pashnit.com/maps/Highway74map.htm
