I will be in Houston in January on business but I hope to take a day or two to visit some sights. I will need some transport so I thought, why not rent something 'local', maybe a Corvette, Dodge Charger etc etc. Google has come up with some options but does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable car rental place which supply such cars?

Can't help with a specific car rental place , but all the car rental shops are in one place a 5 minute shuttle ride from the airport.

Check online to see what cars they offer , I didn't see any muscle cars , corvettes available (summer 2010 I was there a few times).

All the car rental places have offices downtown also - but there weren't a huge selection of cars available.

Drive to Galveston - its only an hour away.

Most of the main rental companies will do Mustangs or similar, and they are pretty cheap. If you Google "luxury car rental houston" you will find a bunch of companies. Uptown Exotics have been around for a long time so are presumably fine, but I have no experience of them.

Be aware that Houston isn't a great driver's city though - the roads are straight, wide and poorly surfaced. Traffic cops are everywhere and you need to get far out of the city onto back roads to have much fun!

Check out hertz as well - they have a prestige and a adreneline car collection. Its only in some cities and not sure if Hosuton is included or not.
Ive had Corvette ZHZ, and a Camaro SS, both for under ~150 USD / day out of both LAX and Miami over the past few months.

Thanks for all the advice. I will give hertz a call first off and see how I get on.

Hi Craig, I've never rented a car overseas before...how does the insurance side of things work? Do Hertz charge a fortune for the adreneline collection?

Cheers

Check what coverage your credit card company provides - quite often, most of the insurances are covered if you pay for it with that. Alternatively your travel insurance (personal or employer) might cover the insurance, but in all cases, read the small print because higher value/specialist cars are sometimes exempt.

I always decline all the insurances, but I have good coverage with my credit card. They can add up to quite a lot, but it won't double the price or anything and while the daily rate might be high, for a short duration hire, it is probably affordable to take the hire company insurance.

Insurance is covered by the regular means.
You can go with the Hertz insurance, which as far as i know is the same for a compact hatch as for a full sized Cadillac, as for a "vette or Camaro SS. it comes in 3 parts in the states @ rental. Liability - to cover killing or injuring someone. - i guess the equivalent of 3rd part in UK. i forgot what the other 2 parts or called, but fundamentally, they cover pranging the car and having your stuff stolen from it. costs are separate and you can pick and choose what you want a la carte, but all 3 would add up to ~70 bucks a day or so regardless of the type of car (from Hertz at least).

Also, worth keeping in mind if you have an Amex (or i imagine some of the other premium type credit cards) that they often cover part or all of rental car insurance. you'd want to check your policies etc, and i never had one in the UK, so dont lknow this to be true for UK cards, but it is for US issued ones.. just about all cards cover liability and the premium ones cover the other 2 bits as well. Also, if you do look to rent a car here, bring the plastic bit of your license. Bizarrely whilst UK rental places want the paper bit and charge extra to call DVLA if you only have the plastic bit, the US rental firms cant deal with the paper and want the plastic one!

Final thing for now. If you do get a Camaro, and you're > 6'2.. get used to slouching. crazy fast in SS form, but the roofline is a little challenging.. :-)
