As per title, I could be relocating to Toronto at fairly short notice for work and to be honest know very little about the place other than very cold winters and hot summers.

Any PHers based there?

Any advice on locations to live, go out, etc.. would be greatly appreciated. I expect I will be working in the financial district and would be going over alone so likely to live in the city or close to work. I've lived and worked in New York before and loved it - eventually moving out of Manhattan to Hoboken and preferred the pace of life in NJ.

Hi Skibum
Not an answer but I'd be willing to hear about your experiences.
I come over this weekand & family will follow in a month (obviously some major diferences in our requirements vs. yours). I/we are moving to Oakville - GTA suburbia!
I'm trying to bring the TVR over and know car insurance will be a bugger for johnny-foreigner with only EU driving experience.
Skiing - we're all looking forward to that after 4 years in Switzerland.

Ross - best of luck with your move.
I'm flying out next week for a few exploratory meetings so hope to get a bit of a feel for the place.
You're brave trying to take the TVR over - I hear that traffic in GTA is a nightmare. Combine that with the long cold winters and it could be more trouble than it is worth!

cheers, like having the car in Switzerland I'll keep it off the road for the cold bits. Didn't stop the salt eating the chassis though. For Cananda, I have ordered a Honda Pilot Touring for the long cold winter :-)
It's only been two weeks but GTA traffic seems OK - I do take the toll road though (407)

I moved to Montreal in feb but a load of my friends all moved to Toronto (we all worked at the same place in the UK).

For what it's worth they all seem to love it over there and so far the winter has been really mild!

Don't worry, it'll get to be seriously cold in February.

There are a few of us in and around the Toronto area who have TVRs. Feel free to get in touch.

Toronto is the city all other Canadians love to hate. However, the Brits I have seen move there seem to be happy there. It is the most American of Canada's urban centers. Its summer lake area.. called Muskoka, is 3 hours away. Easily accessible ski facilities are suitable for toddlers only...and the Quebec centers are a day away by car. T0 (pronounced tee'oh) (Toronto's the nickname) city is flat. It is BIG by European standards...with a LOT of surburbia. But it is still ranked 4th in the world most livable cities...which must say something.

Tourist rank Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Quebec City as their favorites.

Thanks for all the comments and advice.

It looks like I'll be arriving some time in mid to late January - visa depending, but should be a formality as an inter company deal. Still working out where in the city to live, but expect it will probably be the Harborfront or Liberty Village.

I'll no doubt come back to this post once I land and perhaps we can arrange a meet up for some beers.
