Strange question I know but, what does America in general call a car? A friend is working on a data based project that is car related and would like it to appeal to the American people. I'm unable to disclose any more than that but she would like people to find it through the internet and therefore the search words are going to be important. So is it a 'car'? or a 'motor' etc? Thankyou in advance!
Vehicle (pronounced Veehearkill) is widely used, moreso than car in the Midwest. Automobile is also used, although to a lesser extent. Ride is the vernacular term.
A motor is an engine so you get confused looks if you use motor for car/vehicle. I also had to learn that a bonnet is a hood, a hood is a convertible roof, the boot is the trunk, a gearbox is a transmission and petrol is gas. Most of my colleagues call a Jaguar a Jagwire and actually seem incapable of pronouncing it correctly.

That drives me utterly insane! I grew up in the midwestern U.S., but at least we pronounced it "jagwar" (I've yet to find any "i" in the word Jaguar). Having owned one for a while, my wife and I started using the British pronunciation on a lark and it stuck. Of course, now I sound like a pretentious ass to most other Americans. unrepentant said:

I absolutely cannot, for the life of me, say Jaguar. Jagwire is the only way it will come out of my mouth, no matter how hard I try. If I do try, it'll come out like Jagyer or something similar.
