As title. I looking for a mountain bike to "get fit" any advise or ideas. Not looking to break the bank, but id like to be able to upgrade it if biking turns out to be a success rather than something that sits in the garage getting dusty.

Thanks

Matt

Matt, If you are in the Southend area there is a council owned bike place at the bottom of Progress Road on the right. They get all the areas unwanted bikes, overhaul and service them and sell them cheap to the public to get people into biking. They have quite a selection that is contstantly changing.

Head over to Evans on the Lakeside retail park, decent selection. I bought a Specialized and a Scott from there this month.

What's your budget?

Bike Trax in Brentwood High Street are also good and Chelmer Cycles by the Cricket ground in Chelmsford

The Boardman range from Halfords always get excellent reviews as well, although you might have to take it to a proper bike shop to get it set up!

When I last went to Chelmer Cycles their range started about £900, they seem to sell the premium brands like Cannondale.

That Specialized is the same price at Evans but they give you a free service after 6 weeks to tighten cables etc.

Get one built to the spec you want, I'm just having my old 94 Marin rebuilt into a single speed for just thrashing along the railway lines, cost a couple hundred quid. Also have a Specialized full sus and a Giant roadie that I bought off the peg, both good bikes but could've got a lot more bike for the money if I had had them built for me.

I use www.missinglinkcycles.com good prices and good advice.

This is pretty decent, not bad value for money:

An older Orange Crush perhaps from eBay (I have one - great all rounder and good for some drops etc if your that way inclined). All Orange bikes are good, and you dont need a full sus rig...

Carrera Kraken Hardtail £300 squid at Halfrauds at the moment. Had one myself for 6 months and it has put up with a hell of a lot since without a grumble.

Have been looking for a decent used full susser at sensible money recently, however you don't seem to get too many bargains on ebay at the moment - seems mountain biking is very popular!

Where do you live as there are masses of good trails around Kent?

I went to halfords 2 weeks ago and nothing really took me. I payed 500 for my bike and it has full hydraulic disc, good seat, fat Tyres, and it was clearly lighter all 400 pound bikes. Went over Bedgebury forest last weekend and did the red/black run then played on the free ride area. Almost killed me but was worth it, the bike never missed a beat on the other hand.
