It's being reported on the BBC news site that the tolls are going up and (get this)
'the money will be used to explore ways to improve traffic flow'

Here's a good way, get rid of the toll ffs. Or perhaps build another crossing to relieve the 100 odd and fifty year old blackwall tunnels.

How/why would traffic increase by 17% if there was no toll? Does anyone know anybody that would like to go back and forth but won't because of the toll? What an absolute load of bull. Of course bringing 4 lanes of motorway to a stop really helps congestion, traffic flow, the environment and the traffic in surrounding areas

Im glad there using the money for a worth while cause!

Maybe a few speed bumps all the way from junction 21a south bound to the bridge would give a more uniform flow, and width restrictions in all lanes north bound from junction 8 to the tunnel.

Traffic would increase by 17% as it would be faster flowing and a more viable route for people.

Traffic flow rates would also increase by an even bigger amount - the bds.

Being a cynic I can only assume that putting the toll up to £2.50 is to make it more desirable when they decide to sell it.

Considering it was meant to be free after the tolls had paid for the bridge build itself this is an utter joke. s of the highest order. The VERY highest.

"Ministers said they would abandon the tolls - £1 for cars and £2.90 for trucks - when construction costs for the tunnel and bridge were paid off, but when the project went into profit in 2004 they remained in place." From...

Apparently it's no longer a toll. It's now a congestion charge. What a scam. They create the congestion then charge us to sit in it!!!

I see they're talking about a third crossing again to relieve the congestion.

Just take away the fking tolls. Problem solved.

Taking away the tolls worked very well in the summer when a power failure kept the barriers up and no tolls were collected for a few days. Traffic jams in the area..... I think not.

The latest Government excuse for keeping the tolls in place and then raising them in the next two years is to pay for the £1bn project to build the new bridge just to the east of the current one. This project will be completed by a private firm and the new bridge will also have tolls in place as well mad

Why not switch to an ANPR based charging system if they must have one, like the Congestion charge?

Or is that too sensible a question?

I have a dart tag and also a French toll tag

The difference is in France the tag sensor is at the entrance to the booth so it's beeped and the barrier is up by the time you've reached it. Most booths tolls have a dedicated booth and of course it uses credit card so none of the prepaid nonsense with have with dart.

Of course with Dartford we get no dedicated lane, sensors so bad that you often sit there waving the tag about so that it eventually registers and opens the barrier. Oh and a system that is supposed to tell you when your prepaid limit is low that often dosent. Leaving you sitting there like a fool with no change and a tag with no credit

£2.50 is extortion! I regularly commute between my home in Bucks to my family home in Kent. It's probably further to go anti clockwise round the M25, but I think if they raise the toll to £2.50 I will do it on principal. Rather £5 worth of extra fuel than giving the bds £5 to sit in traffic jams they have created. It just doesn't sit well.
As Smartypants said, the French would protest. I lived in France for 7 years and say what you want about them being cheese chewing surrender monkeys, at least they'll stand up for something, not like the Brits. It's the one thing that upsets me most about this country - the massive indifference.

I motion for a PH Protest. If places on the Kent run had to be limited to 100 places, I'm sure we could find 200 PHers in Kent, Essex, Herts, Bucks and East London who are directly affected by this increase.

Lets do it on the first Saturday morning of the February half term, to create maximum disruption and hence create maximum awareness.

I've just had a quick Google. I reckon there are 14 lanes in either direction at the toll booth.
If we were really well organised, we could arrange a meet at somewhere around the bottom of the M1 heading south / Clockwise and a Northbound /anti clockwise crew meeting somewhere like the M20 / M25 junction. Aim to converge on the toll at the same time and bring the whole thing to a stop. Leave maybe 2 lanes in each direction free for emergency vehicles.

you know what...

its posts like this that might just be able to get some sort of ball rolling. I feel you need businesses (courier/haulage firms etc) on side... people who rely on the tolls every single day.

Let's do it then. I can't drive at the minute as I'm still recovering from a shoulder op, but give it another few weeks.

I often use the crossing and it is very annoying this proposed price increase.
Public action sounds great but i think the numbers needed to make an impact at the tunnel would be massive.
