A £12m scheme to install variable speed cameras on the M20 in Kent is being rolled out.

They will be placed in overhead gantries in Maidstone after public consultation revealed 56% of people were in favour of the move.

They activate when a driver breaks the speed limit displayed on digital signs.

The Highways Agency said they would cut congestion and accidents, but the Association of British Drivers said they were unnecessary and wasted money.

Spokesman Nigel Humphries said the cameras, between junctions four and seven, were "all about bullying and regulating drivers for the sake of it".

"We think there's not much that can be achieved positively by these schemes that can't be done by warning signs, matrix signs and advisory speed limits," he said.

Will they stop foreign lorry's killing people with there dodgy overtaking manouver's ?

That's the biggest cause of accident's on the M20 .

Will they catch the tailgating foreign lorry's behind the vehicle's that do slow down due to the speed camera's .

O no more revenue from speeding local's than dangerous foreign lorry's .

are they going to change the matrix signs from the current ones to include a red ring around the number?? If not they will remain advisory and therefore cannot be enforced. Wouldnt the money be better spent on maintaining thr roads?

Hasn't all this already been installed? Already cameras on most of the gantrys and the matrix signs on the other side.

No the gantrys are there but there are only cameras in 2 gantrys each way and as for the matrix signs they only display a number without a red ring so therefore is only advisory. These are going to be on the M25 at the other end of the M20/A2 as well.....

I wonder how many policeman and women £12 million would pay for?

That would be a better use of the resources.
