Banger Racing at Arena Essex
Discussion
On the Saturday I went to Brands Hatch for the Britcars and watched some of the race from the pit lane. Marvelling at the level of professionalism, commitment and sheer outlay the teams had made.
On the Sunday I went to the Arena Essex (Fathers Day treat) - my first time Banger Racing. Prior to going I gave myself a good talking to about not being a car racing snob and to try and enjoy it for what is was worth. No need... I really enjoyed it and was genuinely impressed by some of the driving in the Super Bangers & Group A Hot Rods - they seemed less intent in using each other as cornering aids than many of the BTCC drivers.
For 12 quid it was a good afternoon - and there were more people spectating than at the Britcars the day before (but as was pointed out to me in the Britcar forum it was Le Mans weekend).
Does this make me a leper on these forums or are there others out there who secretly enjoy Banger Racing?

No, I've seen some stunning racing with bangers and some stuff that made me cry with laughter. Team racing was the funniest. Team A qualified first so all 4 cars lined up at the front. Standing start, and as the flag dropped team B realised quite quickly that team A had all been in reverse!
They have a banger racing track at Henham, Essex also and back in the early 90's, late at night I took my road car up there (Capri - don't laugh) and got on the track for a couple of laps. It was just left open!
So rough I thought I'd lost my fillings from the vibrations
I'd love to have a proper go (not in my own car)

I love banger racing, stock car racing and also fond of a bit of speedway (absolute nutcases!).
Never been to arena essex but certainly up for a group outing.
Group outing? Now there's a thought - let's see if anyone expresses interest on the Thursday (at the Lodge meeting). I'd certainly give it a go...Never been to arena essex but certainly up for a group outing.

Magnificent On Sunday they had Metro and Fiesta pairs - one race chained in line, one race chained side by side. There was an art in driving the pairs.
When chained in line - a simple nudge of the 'towed' car would produce a spectacular jack-knife.
The programme made mention of races a few years back when 5 car chains were raced. One memorable chain consisted of 4 Granadas with a Escort on the end - that has got to be some ride...
LOL we too were at Arena Essex on Fathers day....after our very succesful evening at Brands following the Britcars for our charity event.
If it was your first time you were not treated to anywhere near the best. The same as you the first time I went (I raced saloons for 11 years all over country) I was a bit of a race snob but soon dropped that when you realise that competition in motorsport is the same if you are racing a lawnmower or an F1 Car.
We regulalry go on a sunday as its a late start (2pm) and its generally finished by tea time.
the firecracker in november is definately one not to be missed and probably the best part of 5000 people turn up for that one.
