A12 - New cameras between Marks tey / Kelvedon
Discussion
Hmmm thats strange. Didn't see anything on tuesday evening. Although I've always seen roadworks going on in places between Witham and Colchester after 10pm.
Hope it's not scameras. But then who knows what's going to happen as Essex council have launched this public consultation about the A12.

I went through them again today and on the first one my Snooper went off with "LASER" on the display.
I eMailed BBC Essex - They said on the show today that they think it will be for roadworks, but were not seeming 100% sure...
Worrying - "high" speed certainly isn't the issue, especially on that spot of the A12

I've seen these and too was a bit suspicous. At the moment haven't got my snooper - so if anyone can update on exactly what they are would be much appreciated.
Cameras...sorry, safety equipment, in place for at least seven weeks. Full story here:http://www.essexchronicle.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?no...
I went through them today at 60mph and a huge dot matrix display lit up and told me to SLOW DOWN.
I was quite happily pootling along with no-one near me, but that is going to scare the life out of someone who is concentrating whilst driving in heavy traffic.

They're not on the SPECS database
http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/specs-speed-camera-l...
They don't look the same as the cameras shown on the site (examples of which I drive past regularly on the M25 in Kent clockwise just after the crossing)

Here's the response from the HA:
Dear Mr xxxxx.
Reference the VASID Vehicle Activated Speed Indicator Devices set up on the A12.
"The new safety equipment is being installed as part of a seven-week on-road trial. The A12 at Kelvedon is one of 4 sites being used as part of the trial (details of the other three sites are not confirmed).
"The equipment (which includes a large electronic sign - Variable Message Sign) known as a Vehicle Activated Speed Indicator Device (VASID) will alert those drivers travelling at the highest speed, that they need to "SLOW DOWN". The equipment will not be used for enforcement purposes or anything like that - it is literally being installed to test the equipment and also monitor the impact on driver behaviour.
I hopethis information is helpful.
Regards
So the upshot is, they DO want to make drivers who are travelling perfectly safely and well under the speed limit, CRASH!

It's ridiculous.
Why am I being disturbed by flashing red signs for doing 60 on a 70 carriageway, on a sunny day, with no other traffic? Why do I have to slow down?
Well the response you got from Highways agency talks of the 'highest' speeds. Why am I being disturbed by flashing red signs for doing 60 on a 70 carriageway, on a sunny day, with no other traffic? Why do I have to slow down?
If they mean 'illegal' then there's no reason why we should get flashed below 70, (or 70+7+2 if ?ACPO? guidelines are followed) -- perhaps their gear was having a bad day last week. But since it looks like SPECS, one presumes it works on timing between the three measurement points: A->B to trigger the sign and B->C to assess impact of flashing the sign. In which case, I cannot quite see how it could 'go-wrong' -- I'd expect it to be online+working, or offline, not a bit of both! (There's no radar to need periodic recalibration)
However, if they just mean the fastest people on the road at any one time get flashed, then anyone on an empty road would get flashed when they're by the sign...
Bizarre either way.
(BTW, thanks for reproducing that email: I won't be dreading the post now!)
