New Cameras on the M20
Discussion
As far as I know they're ANPR cameras for measuring the time it takes for the traffic to flow between the junctions (the cameras aer at Junctions 5,6 and 7).
Apparently your reg number is scrambled by a computer so they can't be used for speed enforcement. It's purely a traffic management thing. They've been there six months or so.

Hi
MMM i am not so sure they have been working on the bridges on the M20 between J5 and 4. As Damien said those boxes look very like the overhead speed cameras on the M25......
I wonder wether they will put in speed restrictions the same as the M25 during rush hour, which will mean the camera will get turned on annd set to a certain speed????

These ones are brand new. Not six months for sure. I use it everyday and only noticed them within the last week or so, a friend who lives of jct 6 has only just noticed them too.

They are definitely speed cameras - grey box with lense and flash above each lane!!D
D - hows you TV?
PS - the wine was good, didn't last long!!

TV - Brilliant, thanks again, ordered the new one for the lounge the other day and told sky to shove the multi room and they offered it to me for a fiver. Said not bothered. The box still works as a free box so has the usual free channels. Might put it in the kitchen.
Thanks again for your help!!
Glad the wine went down well. Got to get my exhaust quicker now but that is another story.
Cheers

You are correct. The new boxes that have appeared on the gantries are the box cameras that are also on the Variable Speed Limit section on the M25 J12 - J15.
You'll have also noticed that the overhead lane signs have been changed so that the speed can be shown with a red ring around it thus making the speed shown enforce-able through cameras.
I haven't seen the red rings yet, but given the roadside signs say overnight works are lasting five weeks or so, i would assume that after this time all the cameras have been installed!

Thank you for your email dated 1 February 2008 regarding the above, which was forwarded to me by Kent Highway Services.
The speed cameras are part of a Contolled Motorway System. The system is designed to help reduce congestion by improving traffic flow, provide more reliable journey times, improve safety and reduce noise and air pollution.
The system uses sensors in the road surface to detect the speed, volume and flow of traffic to determine the optimum speed to keep traffic moving. The speed is then displayed on signals on the gantries overhead. By controlling the speed of the traffic, road users will experience a smoother journey with a reduction in stop-start congestion. This also reduces vehicle emissions and noise pollution.
The system has been installed and is now operating on the M20 in both directions between Junctions 4 to 7. To provide road users with an opportunity to use and understand the benefits of the Controlled Motorway system, the speed limits will not become mandatory and enforceable before Autumn 2008.
The same system has been successfully used on the M25 and as part of the M42 Active Traffic Management trial, where vehicle emissions have been reduced by between 2% and 10% and weekday traffic noise has been significantly reduced. This system will not however include the hard shoulder and emergency refuge system that has been successfully trialled on the M42.
I trust this fully answers your query. However, if you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yep these are just like the M25 section between 10 and 12. I was told this week that these cameras go live mid April. These are not the monitoring cameras as that has been live for at least a year, where as these cameras were only installed late last year. So yet another money spinner!!
If you look carefully at the pic you'll notice the cameras are not actually the same. The one on the inside lane doesn't appear the same as the other two, and the outside lane camera on the right is the only one with a bulb to the left of the box..
Could be similar to the M25 where there are only actually 3 active cameras on the variable limit, the rest are dummy boxes due to costs. And again like the M25 version looks like it will only monitor the outer lanes.
Just be careful through there people and avoid the outside lane
