The road between Tunbridge Wells and East Grinstead (A264 I think). Although it's only fun v early in the morning before the mono-speeders turn up.
I used to see a girl that lived just off the A264 near Hartfield. It was when I'd just bought my MINI... I was in absolute heaven on the roads round there zippy144 said:

They were all roads I thrashed the company fiesta down when I was a trainee house monkey with Page and Wells The 1st stage of the Kent run was pretty intence.

I also have a particular love for the A20 as it winds out of Maidstone towards Ashford, through Harrietsham, Lenham etc...
Then there is the Medway Tunnel near St Mary's Island for a bit of
And then all the little lanes and B roads around Darland, Bredhurst and Boxley (ask Tony Hetherington)
The A229 Towards Sussex from Maidstone is great if you catch it traffic free as well. Sadly, during the day it's populated by the flat cap and 19.9mph brigade, with limited scope for overtaking outside the villages

M20 after midnight. Dover - Orpington in under an hour...
Seriously though there are some lovely little lanes around Hildenborough, Underriver etc. if you have a small nippy car like a 205.
Similarly I've heard that Dover to University of Kent at Canterbury can be despatched inside 12 minutes along the A2. In a diesel.Seriously though there are some lovely little lanes around Hildenborough, Underriver etc. if you have a small nippy car like a 205.

Did that one on my bike lessons to get to the test centre. Quality road, but as you say timed right is important.Raify said:

Yeah lovely road, but agree it has to be early. I was fortunate enough (!) to have a commute along that route towards Horsham for about 8 weeks a couple of months back; it was such a shame I had to be on site at 6:30am, that road was one of the few things that made it worth getting up...zippy144 said:

I love this route too, and its all the better for going right passed the front door (Benenden). Variations can be had in the form of turning right at Rolvenden (instead of left towards Tenterden), then right to go towards Newenden, Nothiam then Rye; word of warning though, there are VERY few overtaken places. My favourite circular/figure-of-eight route from home is to go:
- Benenden
- Rolvenden
- Tenterden
- Small Hythe
- Wittersham
- Rye
- Peasmarsh
- Newenden
- Rolvenden
- Benenden
- Golford
- Sissinghurst
- East on the A262, then left by the Three Chimneys pub (I think),
- straight over the A274
- Pluckley
- Charing
- Right onto the A20
- Ashford
- A28 to Tenterden
- Rolvenden
- Benenden

I haven't done it for a while, it's probably covered in speed cameras by now! I once came over the brough coming into Dover at a ridiculous speed to find a BIB roadblock in front of me! I just managed to screech to a halt in time to find four coppers faling about laughing, when one could get his breath he stammerd " your tax disk seems to be fine sir!" Just goes to prove they have got a sense of humour sometimes!
The circuit from Rye to Camber and out to Lydd is a fantastic if rather bumpy set of twisties, then North to Brenzett where you can either go back to Rye along the A269, or straight across the roundabout and back round along the aforementioned Military Canal road which has a number of very regular s bends.
Early mornings and evenings are best as always.
No plod on any of this. Be careful on the road from Brenzett to Ashford though. Often a mobile trap on there, and it's a very fast and tempting road at times.
Good chippy at Rye too.

All the roads mention around the Ashford area to tenterden, rye etc are ones that I regularly use on the bike, so much fun especially if you get a clear run of it. Anybody coming from Canterbury direction, take the road from Chilham upto Challock before heading over to Charing hill, that's a great bit of road too, not very long though unfortunately, and look out for the buses that park on one of the bends.
Becareful on the canal road to Rye on bright Sunday mornings, plod very often set themselves up in a gateway, I'd be getting the bus to work if it hadn't been for a kind Elise driver flashing frantically at me one morning to warn me.

Do you mean the road into Rye from Appledore? I use it regularly with impunity, and sometimes with the Lotus, and have never seen them. Hope they haven't seen me!Gassing Station | Kent & Essex | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
