I drive that road occasionally sometimes myself. So let me get this straight, you now need a speed camera and a 40 limit to tell you that you need to slow down for a roundabout (or half r/b in this case)?
And aren't there advisory 20 limit signs there at the roundabout already?

It's a good job you never put your boot down then Ken? or you'll have to swap your fleet for something more sedate.

Someone told me years ago that there are major gas or oil lines just below there, so the cost to redirect those, to do the road works makes it financially unfeasiable. How true that is I dont know.
Thank you for your recent e-mail. The surface material which has recently been laid at the Fortune of War can take some time to come up to the correct performance and you may have seen other recently surfaced sites within the County where slippery surface signs are placed.
In this particular location it was decided that the imposition of a temporary speed restriction would be the best method to ensure that safer speeds were adhered to and the likelihood of accidents was reduced.
The Fortune of War is a dilemma which is always being monitored and solutions considered by maintenance and Road Safety personnel. Straightening the road and doing away with the remains of the roundabout have been considered many times over the years however there are several problems associated with this:
Gas, Water, Electricity and Communications pipes and cables all pass through the centre of the roundabout and would have to be diverted.
The horizontal and vertical alignments of the carriageway would have to be altered.
Any alteration on the vertical alignment would result in a new footbridge having to be constructed.
Alternative routes would have to be found for traffic which currently accesses and exits from Laindon High Road at this junction as there is no land available to create slips roads to the correct standards.
The disruption and congestion while carrying out any realignment.
Various estimates have been made over the years on the costs of the above works and all are in the millions.
