Barkingside - Good/bad area?
Discussion
Redbridge
Newbury Park
Hainault
Dont really rate any of the above
Chigwell - expensive, lots of new money but generally a quite nice area
Loughton - not bad in parts - you do have to pick your area. Stay away from Debden
Epping - Generally OK
As you might guess I am not a lover of the M25 Essex Corridor - but needs must I guess. You might like to also consider Woodford Green and Buckhurst Hill.

I'm not really sure that either Barkingside, Newbury Park, Hainault or Redbridge are that bad actually. I suppose I would say that as I have lived in the area for most of my life but north of the A12 (i.e. really don't go near Ilford, especially the south part) is ok. It's just like any other outer London suburb as regards the housing (with prices to match) but you're on the door-step to the Essex countryside (which is acutally quite pleasant) but with the benefit of being extremely close to the City and with great transport links, both road and rail. There are pleanty of nice bars and restaurants around and if you like shopping, Lakeside (full of chav's) and Bluewater (full of wealthier chav's) malls are only about 15 minutes away. The schools in Redbridge are pretty good as well, if you have children.
Woodford Green, Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell are definitely nicer, with larger (not always classier) houses but you will definitely pay handsomely to live in Essex's so called 'Golden Triangle' - as said before, full of new money.
