Living near Ramsgate ?
Discussion
My daughter and B/F have both got jobs in Ramsgate and are looking to move to the area . So can anyone give an idea please on nice places within about 15 miles of Ramsgate , with a view to buying a property of around £350k . And also places to avoid , so they can tick that off the list. They are being given 6 months accommodation with their jobs , but looking for a head start before they head down that way.
Any help is appreciated.

Ramsgate and indeed the whole of the Isle of Thanet is a backwater. Any help is appreciated.
Don't listen to marketing guff, avoid at all costs. The houses are cheap
there for a reason. The Isle is too far away from anywhere to be
economically vigourous.
As far west as possible sounds a good idea. There are some
nice parts of Canterbury. Faversham has some of the most remarkably
unobservant drivers in the country. Dover is migrant-ville and Ashford has some
good road and rail connections to the rest of the world. Some of the North
Kent coast towns make ideal retirement places.
I spent 15 years visiting east Kent. Thankfully I don't have to
do that anymore.

Broadstairs is nice. Or look at villages a few miles west. If they can stretch to it Whitstable/ chestfield much nicer.
They did mention Whitstable and property seems affordable. As long as he has a garage for his motorbikes, the house could be tiny, apparently ...... although my daughter see's it in a differing light ! There are some nicer areas for sure.
Kingsgate/Broadstairs/St Peters can be very nice. Something like THIS is 2 minutes round the corner from where my grandparents lived when I was growing up. The beach is less than a 10 minute stroll and there's a sizeable park near by too if they have something like a dog that needs exercising.
Coming round the south coast a bit you've got the likes of Sandwich and Cliffsend which are especially nice in the summer. For Example you can find something like THIS well within budget.
Getting more towards a 30 minute commute you're heading out to Dover/Folkestone and the surrounding areas. Kingsdown/Kearsney/River/Eyethorne/Capel etc. are all 'nicer' areas but there are only few small areas I would seriously consider avoiding.

Thanet has had relatively high unemployment and low growth for as long as I can remember. Given they're young, perhaps the best thing to consider is where will maximise the increase in property value - so that they are least likely to be left behind when they come to move away.
Second-home hot-spots like Whitstable and maybe Sandwich would probably be the best places in this respect. Whitstable perhaps more so as it's in striking distance of London, but a PITA to get in and out of, and Sandwich is nearer to Ramsgate.
There are pockets of gentrification in all the towns though. There are pro's and con's for living in such an area but it could be quite exciting.

Bit of a thread resurgence. They are living on campus at the school and are really enjoying the life. They also have a lab pup , which they have free space for walking on the school fields, of which there is plenty and also only a 15 min walk to the coast , makes a very relaxed lifestyle. They are house hunting and so far , the one's they liked havent worked out . From being needing a lot of work and not getting it a price that makes the work sensible , to ' over 60's only ' in a 'normal home' , amongst other weird things.
One thing that has popped up is car insurance. Since getting the dog, the Seat Ibiza Coupe or MX5 arent ideal to transport the three of them. I told my daughter she needs to change her insurance and driving licence to where she is . Well, the shock is the cost has gone up 120% from what she was paying !! . Looking at a Mondeo Estate amounts to even more money, in the region of a grand to insure. Found a Volvo V50 1.8 petrol and was £850.
Can't believe a postcode can make such a difference to insurance . I have told her to use a postcode of a 'potential' street she may find a home to see if the current location is the issue. Albeit the school is locked and patrolled, seems very odd. Her other halfs KTM Beast , he has only found one insurance company with a premium of £1300 and excess of £1000 , as a weekend toy.
Any ideas on this , would be great.
Cheers

Presume St Lawrence College?
I went there as did many of my friends, loved it. In fact my fiancée who teaches at Wellesley just up the road has taken a hockey team there to play them today.
Funny how you get the debate about Thanet. I honestly wouldn't want to live anywhere else, not on a permanent basis anyway. I hope they continue to enjoy the rich mix of sandy beaches, good pubs and countryside for as long as they wish. Couldn't think of many better places for walking the lab either!

Also, on this matter may I suggest trying a local broker, Abacus Insurance in Palm Bay. Sometimes a little bit of local knowledge goes a long way on that type of thing. Ask for Emily, I've always found her very helpful. One thing that has popped up is car insurance. Since getting the dog, the Seat Ibiza Coupe or MX5 arent ideal to transport the three of them. Plenty of London money ensures a good range of half decent shops.
Ditto restaurants
Pleasant views
Good water sports
Okay communications.
Bad:
The London second home owners and locals don't get on.
It's still a working town and feels like it in places.
It's not hard to exhaust a fairly short list of things to do.
Dog poo. For some reason there are lots of dogs and people don't clean up behind them.

You are correct in the school. They are loving it. Have found a home now and had an offer accepted. We are envious in the pictures we get on their walks. House prices are pretty reasonable too. So, they have a small chain to deal with , so maybe a new year and a new home, if all goes well. I will mention the broker. Thanks for your help.I went there as did many of my friends, loved it.
