Hi guys,

A job in Basildon means I'm moving to the area at the end of this month. I'm completely new to the area and was essentially just seeing if anyone had any advice they fancied giving me. I'm looking to live in the Billericay/Brentwood/Basildon area. Any places to avoid? Any places that are nice?

If anyone would like to offer anything else about the area (things to do, clubs, meets, anything really!), that would also be hugely appreciated. I'm just finishing uni now and looking to try and create some new social circles a little more local.

Cheers!

Getting close now to Dick Turpin weekly meet on Wednesdays on A127 Basildon. Mainly hot rods, yanks and street and strip stuff.

Wickford, Billericay and the outlying areas are close enough to Basildon to make getting to work easy.

Brentwood will increase financial outlay considerably more.

Consider South Woodham Ferrers/Battlesbridge/Rawreth areas when searching for a place to live - some good options in the area.

Agree with that.

Or move to sunny Southend and live by the sea biggrin

Despite it's bad reputation it has got some nice area's and is only a 25 - 35 min drive from Basildon.

Meet wise we've got the Lodge meet every 3rd thirsday, the Breakfast meet at the Hare in Chelmsford on the 1st saterday of the month, and another breakfast meet on the 2nd saterday of the month.

Billericay is the best of those IMO. Brentwood is more expensive and I dint like the high street as much. On the plus side you can use oyster. Another thing to bear in mind is that cross rail will stop at brentwood and shenfield.

Upminster is also worth a look.

Avoid anywhere east on the A127. Driving towards London in the morning is a nightmare on that road.

Ford?

Thanks for the replies, I'm certainly looking to get myself to some meets. Hopefully I'll be able to bring something a little more deserving along than my shed that's got me through uni. I've got a few houses lined up to view this weekend, so hopefully I'll have made a decision on where I'm living soon.

That seems to be the consensus so far!

I hadn't but I will now thanks. Some nice stuff I'd previously overlooked there.

I have recently moved to Langdon Hills (off of Pitfields) and really like the area; its very quiet with no through traffic and has everything I need close by and the train station was ideal for the London commute smile

Not all of Basildon should be avoided. You're budgt will most likely dictate which of the nicer parts you could live in.

When you do start looking at houses you can tell me the postcode if you want, and then i can tell you if it's an area that's nice, or an area we go to for a lot of drink/drugs problems, or even an area we only got in under police escort at night smile

Are there really any areas in Basildon like that though? I know a few places are a little less likeable but don't really know of any areas like that.

Agreed there matt, I dont know of any that are that bad and have been around most of the area (not lived there as such but stayed in many of them)

Felmores maybe one of the worst?

Google Basildon. Click images. Look at the top few images... Be proud that you have Hollywood style signage greeting your relatives when they come to visit.

Basvegas...

Well after meeting a few people from work, talking to them about the area and having a look round for myself... I've ended up in Brentwood. It's a little more expensive than the places I was looking at in Basildon, but it seems like as good a place as any to start. It's not a long term rent, so once I know the area a little better I'll reconsider my options.

Thanks again for the advice. If anyone has any views on Brentwood let me know!

Probably the best out of those mentioned tbh. Downside, you might find yourself on an episode of Towie.

that's because we're right!!! As for Brentwood - as long as you avoid the uumpa-luumpas at the sugar-hut I guess there are worse places to be (baz/pitsea/vange for example!)
