I normally get up early Sunday and drive down to Southend sea front for breakfast but last Sunday I thought I'd try Chelmsford. Drove around the town and the surrounding areas for an hour and couldn't find anything. I mean a proper cafe though, mug of tea, egg and chips that sort of thing, not a coffee shop.
Cheers.

acanteen in London Road is at the same time a poncey coffee shop as a place that serves an awesome cooked breakfast. Proper bully buster.

Opens at 09.30 on a Sunday.

Greasy Spoons

Rose Cafe (on Three Mile Hill/A414) heading out of Chelmsford on the left hand side - rough car park so watch out if your in anything low. Usually open on a Sun (but might not be in the winter).

Bit further away there's a cafe (think it's called Dee's) off the London bound A12 slip road at Hatfield Peverel (I've never tried it though).

There are a couple of the local garden centres that have cafes that do breakfast's as well.

There's a new cafe opening on Moulsham St soon - not sure whether that'll be open on sunday though.

Agree on the recommendation for acanteen though - easily the best cafe grub in Chelmsford at the moment. Wetherspoon's is just down the road as well if you like a pint w/ your brekkie wink

Cafe in the Ingatestone Saddlery in Margareting end of the Old A12.

Great food and huge tarmac car park. 5 min drive out of Chelmsford.

Wouldn't go near Dee's in Hatfiled Peverel unless I was with the mother-in-law.... I'd take her there !

Dee's is shocking - had some scrambled eggs in there once and didn't know if I was to be supplied with a straw or if I should pour them into a cup and drink the bloody things. laugh

Try Checkers Diner in New Duke industrial park. American themed but very good breakfasts

Cheers guys, lots of good suggestions there!
I went to Colchester Zoo this morning and tbh I think Marks Tey is a bit too far from me for a casual brekkie Carl. I'd be up for it when the weather comes in a bit though.

Can you park safely near the Acanteen?

Cheers.

We had a fantastic breakfast at a cafe just off the hatfield Peveral slip road. Superb quality and v popular with bikers too. I hate crap cafés and this one was not in that cetegory. Rose cafe on the old A12 out of Chelmsford is acceptable too.

There's a good cafe at Norton Heath on the A414, about halfway between Chelmsford and Ongar.

Indeed the Norton Heath Café is pretty good - had a snack or two from there.

I can second that. Been there a few times on the bike. Plenty of room for cars though.

Had a bit of an adventure this morning.

Headed for the Acanteen, when I pulled round there was nowhere to park but someone was just leaving so I went around the block again, when I got back it was a disabled spot so I went around again. This time I tried behind the flats opposite, there were a couple of gaps but not big enough to get my fat arse into.

Gave up on that and decided to try the American Diner, put the Duke Estate in the satnav and headed off. Misread the nav and ended up on the 130, misread it again at the next junction and got on the A12. Had to drive up to Hatfield Peveral to turn round so tried to find the cafe on the slip road, no luck. Came all the way back and took the wrong exit again, went under the 12, came back again, wrong way again, back from somewhere else, finally got on the Dukes Estate. Drove round that for 15 minutes but couldn't find the Diner. Headed home.

So, an hour and twenty minutes drive, twenty quid in petrol, car got filthy on the A12 and no breakfast!

Back to Southend next week me thinks!

I know, I'm a dhead!

I know all the stuff between Southend and London really well but when I get out on the outskirts of Chelmsford I'm clueless. It was pure luck I found you that day in Colchester!
