I am going to view a house on Tomswood Hill in Chigwell and I just wondered if there is anyone who knows the area. What is it like?

The house I found is a nice little end of terrace cottage style house. The price seems reasonable. Im not expecting it to be on par with other more expensive areas of Chigwell but the schools around the house are all good or outstanding according to OFSTED.

Any input from others would be appreciated.

I live quite near there and it's not bad. Are you looking at the Barkingside end or the other end?

The crime rates are about what you'd expect from the area (burglary mainly), I don't know about specific schools but I'm told that they're generally good.

Yes the house is closer to the Barkingside area. Im not going to park my cars outside the house (sorting out separate car storage). I could afford to live in a better area's but I really like this house and just have to decide what to do. I suppose getting a decent alarm system etc etc will potentially put off any fu**ers from breaking in.

You should be fine, it's a nice enough area. OH grew up near there and says it's good. You've got excellent access for shops and tube station there too.

Lived in Barkingside virtually my whole life and it's gradually gone further and further downhill as time's gone on. It's still quite attractive due to the links - both road and rail - but the high street offers little these days. Whether that's specific to B'side or is a general shift of all suburban high streets due to the increased internet use for purchasing goods I don't know. Ultimately unless you need a bank, takeaway food, Asian cuisine or a charity shop, you'll be travelling elsewhere.

Barkingside…………there’s a blast from the past. Lived there up to the age of 17 and then moved away 30 odd years ago, have been back a few times and it certainly has changed a lot.
