I work for a company based in St Leonard's - recently I had to go from home base in Essex via M25/M20 to a site near Staplehurst. The drive from Stallehurst through to work base was really quite picturesque - through vine fields and seemingly unspoilt villages - it seemed to be a downhill gradient all the way!

I've got a nice, if short one for you, almost a special stage if you like.

Coming into Ramsgate from Canterbury take the third exit at the Holiday Inn/Texaco roundabout at Minster.

Take the first left as if heading into the petrol station but continue down the road instead.
This will take you onto Laundry Road, past a small industrial complex, take the next left onto The Lanes.
Continue on this road, under the rail bridge into Cliffsend, and hook a right onto Foads Lane.
Take the Ramsgate Road towards Sandwich (right at the junction) and take the second exit on the roundabout back towards Ramsgate.

You can now choose to go left and head back to Canterbury or right and take the next part of my route.

If you choose to continue take the tunnel to Ramsgate.
At the next roundabout take the second exit into Ramsgate, at the next roundabout go straight on, at the next roundabout take the third exit into Pegwell.
Follow the road through Pegwell, past the Hotel and Sir Stanley Grey. Take the next right onto the Promanade.
At the end of the Promanade bear right past St Augustines Abbey (built by Pugin).
After a nice gentle right/tight left you will be on the cliff top. Take the road all the way down to the Marina and up past the Waterfall.
Continue along the road until you can see the Granville Theater ahead, Take the road to the right leading to the beach.
Tackle the tight hairpin and follow the road to the end.
Park up.
Stroll along the beach and get yourself an ice cream and/or a pint.

Take the road from Tenterden towards Appledore. Watch out for the sharp lh corner near the garden centre. The road couldn't go straight on as that was the ferry terminal! Follow the road to the T junction and turn right. Just before the hump back bridge over the Royal Military Canal, turn right towards Rye. Look over to your right and be amazed at the cliffs - about 10 miles from the sea!!

A good driving road goes from Canterbury to Tenterden too.

Or the little road fromm Staplehurst, past the Farm Museum to Goudhurst. Watch out for the owls!

All a bit more West than East I know, but....

Thanks for all the replies, found a couple of good roads today although some where ruined by other drivers going too slow with no overtaking opportunities

I'm 29 and that has been the route I've taken every car I buy on its initial shakedown.

Don't my quote to heart, i,m only having a chuckle, driving roads round here are sleep inducing,
try the road from faversham to ashford at 6am on a sunday morning, absolute bliss, FYI i'm much nearer
to 70 than you are and have been driving for more years than your age.

One of my favorite runs is from Hastings up to Ashford. The bit of the A259 around Rye is great fun with a nice mix of corners and straights with good visibility, most of the roads around that way offer good entertainment.

There's a lovely bit of road coming out of Rye where you drive uphill through a couple of hairpin bends then turn just by what looks like an old gatehouse to a castle.

The only structure in Rye which matches that description is the Landgate but the uphill hairpins don't fit. Did you mean here? If so, that's the next town, Winchelsea, not Rye. And both of those places are in East Sussex, not Kent. wink

A couple of good roads in East Kent:

B2066 Stone Street from Canterbury to J11 of the M20
Unclassified from the A2 via Barham and the Elham valley to Lyminge: thence to the A20 roundabout next to the Channel Tunnel terminal near Sandling.

The Alkham Valley Road from the A20 to Temple Ewell used to be fun until they stuck a 50 limit on it.

I'm sure the 50 limit on the Alkham Valley is the minimum speed not max...
I live nearby and that seems to work for me anyway.
