Hi Guys, sorry to drop a new thread but I'm trying to get some information about whether the 8Ball Diner on the A12 (Essex) is for sale or not? I'm interested in buying it and getting it up and running again, but the council are being about as useful as a chocolate teapot and I can't get anything out of them, anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Chris

There is a thread in the Kent and Essex section about this place, however, I don't know if it covers this topic.

Great idea on paper, but you can see why it was a failure. Also, had shocking problems cooking the food within a reasonable timeframe...

If that is the place next to the now defunct Commercial vehicle sales site I would be careful. Nothing seems to survive on that stretch of the A12 for very long. Lots of fast passing traffic but not much stopping. Access is quite dangerous there, the site comes up very quickly. and getting back onto the A12 can be difficult.

If it's not the same place then I am probably talking bkss.

I know this place; it's just outside Witham (where I live). As said, getting back onto the A12 can be daunting if you're not in a very powerful car. I think it was a Little Chef previously.

I also live in Witham and I have thought of popping in several times, but, it was never open whenever I went past.

Access is a problem due to the traffic. The Tiptree / Silver End turn off (North Bound) just before is even worse.

Yes there are a few laybys along there where frankly in the Passat I wouldn't stop for fear of never making it out again.

O/T but didn't realise there was so many local PHers. I'm in Rivenhall.

That junction/sliproad is a bit tricky getting on and off.

Don't know about that but there is a Little Chef a bit further up the road, which will be a thorn in the side of any restaurant on the 8 ball site.

I was involved in closing 8 ball down in a minor way, but as for getting it up and running again, I can't be of any help.

Sorry JandJ, I just had a vision of you sitting, hands gripped to the wheel, in loosely fitting clothes with cobwebs inside the car as you stare eternally into the rear view mirror!

I heard a rumour that they were trying to move further up the A12 somewhere.

Anyway IMO access was the problem, but more in the fact that they cant get HGVs in there which is a large chunk of the weekday trade. Anywhere along there that you can get a few lorries in will get a very good footfall as there is very little before for munch coming from the M25. Those two containers on the westbound side are raking it in because they have nice long laybys, being able to only get cars in only gives you the weekend breakfast and out of hours stuff.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I think you are right, it needs a lot of TLC, but hopefully I would be able to pull the car/bike clubs back again. Zuf I will definitely take you up on your offer mate, but becuase I'm such a noobie, the system wont let me send PMs yet... few more hours and I'll be on it! What does everyone here drive/ride?? I'm a bike guy I'm afraid... wink

Most people populate their garage on their profile.

M3 for me. Previously, Cayman S, Impreza STi, Focus ST170, and a few diesels which are a necessary evil wink

It would be good to see the 8Ball up an running again. The original did have a few issues with the speed of service and short slip roads but the concept was great and the flood lit car park meant it was great for meets all year round.

Nothing to do with B Burrows at all...he wanted out after the first 6 months,Brett H still had some input ,and the new partner who lost all his money is my mate, due to many cock ups with Braintree Council and their baliffs they employed...gets very involved....
I'd steer clear of it !!
