As a Chelmsfordian of over 30 years I thought I knew my way around Chelmsford.
So when issued with some ‘officially’ printed out directions on how to get to an address I set off without my sat nav with plenty of time to complete the 4 mile journey.
I finally arrived at my destination 15 mins late - this I put down to the ludicrous directions I was given.

Now I throw a challenge out to anybody that thinks they know Chelmsford.

Just a bit of a laugh I’m going to post these directions in sections over the next few days and it would be interesting to find out at the end of each day where fellow Chelmsfordians (or those that think they know Chelmsford) think they would be.

So the first set of directions.

From Train Station (Duke Street)
Head North towards Broomfield Road, turn left into Coval Lane, then turn left onto Parkway (A1061). Go straight over one roundabout then turn right at the traffic lights onto New London Road. Continue through four sets of traffic lights. Then left into Moulsham Street

All pretty easy so far ....

Come on join in and tell me where you think you would be and what direction your heading.

I'll have a crack... assuming that your including pedestrian crossings in the four traffic lights you'd be facing north east opposite the museum.

Oh .... I can’t hold back any longer
Only one player and I'm impatient

Ok let’s continue ...

The address we’re looking for is
Highfields Resource Centre
Moulsham Street.
(Don’t spoil it by googling it!)

And onto the next set of directions

“Take third exit onto London road, immediately turn right and Highfields is the second building on your left.”

So ..... where are you now?

That's where the directions first go wrong!

So for anybody that’s been playing the game let me make some corrections to these ludicrous directions issued by Essex County Council.

From Train Station (Duke Street)
Head North towards Broomfield Road, turn left into Coval Lane, then turn left onto Parkway (A1061). Go straight over one roundabout then turn right at the traffic lights onto New London Road. Continue through four sets of traffic lights. Then left into Moulsham Street.
Carry straight on, as you pass Moulsham Street on your left New London Road becomes Moulsham Street as it approaches the Miami roundabout.

Ok I’ve fixed the first set of directions - now for the second set.

Take third exit off the Miami Roundabout onto London road, immediately turn right and Highfields is the second building on your left.

However even this second set of instructions is wrong!
They direct you into the small dead end road (where the burger/kebab van sits at night) and because it’s now a dead end road you can’t access the car-park of Highfields.

So it should have read
From Train Station (Duke Street)
Head North towards Broomfield Road, turn left into Coval Lane, then turn left onto Parkway (A1061). Go straight over one roundabout then turn right at the traffic lights onto New London Road. Continue through four sets of traffic lights.
Carry straight on as New London Road becomes Moulsham Street as it approaches the Miami roundabout.
Just before the roundabout you will see a lay-by with a bus stop on the right. Turn right, the entrance to the car park of Highfields is through the lay-by.

What makes the original directions even more laughable is when you realise why I was going to this address.
I was taking my old Dad there who is disabled and this is where they re-access people for suitability to be re-issued with a blue badge (disabled parking permit)
So why in heavens name do the directions start at the train station??? Nobody’s going to be walking there!

We got there 15 mins late to be told ‘Sorry you’ll have to re-book all our appointments are 10 min back-to-back with no spare appointments.’
I have to admit I had a bit of rant pointing out their directions were crap and that’s why we were late.
She said ‘Well people usually leave home early because they know the directions are bad.’
I said ‘How would people know the directions are crap before they used them??????’ and we left.

At least I know where to go next time.

Never knew that - interesting (in a sad way). Suppose the hint is in "New" London Road as presumably Moulsham St pre-dates NLR by a couple of hundred years & therefore takes precedence. You'd have thought it'd be easy for them to sort out though.

In the original directions it's the 'Turn left into Moulsham Street' that's completly wrong. Without that at least you're heading in the right direction.

Them directions are crazy. Also am I right in thinking where you are going from the train station it would be quicker to go up Waterhouse lane and go left at the britvic roundabout. Takes you straight there.

Probably not much in it in distance or written directions.
