Wedding in Cold Norton near Purleigh - where to stay?
Discussion
Hi all,
popping in from the South West looking for advice from the Essex PH'ers
I've got a wedding to go to at Purleigh in October and I'm looking for advice on where to stay
Plan is to take mum and step dad with us, go up on Friday with the wedding Sunday, heading back to the West Country Monday
So, we need somewhere close(ish) to the wedding venue at Cold Norton Golf Club but also a good base to day trip around the area
Also welcome suggestions for where to visit whilst we're up there
Thanks for any help you can give

Cold Norton and/or Purleigh are so small they can hardly be classed as villages so you're not going to be swamped with places to stay that are really local.
The nearest towns are Maldon in one direction or Chelmsford in the other.
Maldon is a mid sized market town which I don't know very well.
Chelmsford is the County Town of Essex - actually it's just been given city status, and although I live in Chelmsford and it being not a bad town or place to live - off the top of my head I can't think of one decent hotel nor can I think of anything worth visiting.
Hope some other locals can be of more help.

Similar comments to above mate.
Purleigh's a very small place - you might find the odd room in a pub though.
There is a small hotel in the centre of South Woodam Ferrers which is the nearest town & only a few minutes drive away with onsite parking (can't remember what it's called though). I think that there might also be a couple of small hotels in Maldon which is also nearby so worth a look.
Chelmsford's the closest large town/City. There are several budget hotels here (as I live in Chelmsford I've never used any of them so can't recommend). Cabs to Purleigh from Chelmsford will be expensive & you'll need to pre-book.
Re things to do - nearby there are decent driving roads all around Maldon & if JD Classics have a breakfast that's worth a visit - good car showroom there (on Wycke Hill Business Park in Maldon). Historic waterfront at Heybridge nr Maldon has old barges & pubs for a drink/lunch.
There's an old WW1 airfield in Purleigh at Stow Maries but it's not usually open to the public (and it's on the market for sale at the moment) and a small military museum in Maldon (Combined Services museum) which I've never been to.
The secret nuclear bunker on the outskirts of Brentwood (prominently sign posted) is pretty good & well worth a visit - depending on which way your coming into the County you might be able to do this before/after the event.
Finally there's plenty of parks etc for walking.

There's a lovely-looking new hotel just opened up in Maldon / Heybridge - in fact, it's where I've reccomended that my guests stay when I get married in October. Worth a look! http://www.le-bouchon.co.uk

I drove past that place twice earlier in the week & hadn't clocked that it was a hotel; just assumed it was a restaurant!TCEvo said:

Yeah, they've been doing it up for what seems like forever, but I went in there the other day to book some rooms on behalf of my Scottish relatives and it looks seriously fancy!Beanoir said:

Erm yeah...made famous by Hotel Inspectors recently, I wouldn't stay there unless you want to make some new friends (not of the human species). There's a few places to stay in Burnham, only 5 miles or so from Cold Norton. Plenty of taxi firms about so no problems with transport.

Hi mate, I live out that way. The hotel people are referring to in South Woodham Ferrers is the Oakwood Hotel I think. No idea what it's like now, it used to be ok when it opened, but that was many years ago.
There's a nice little motel in Latchingdon, about 5 miles from Coldnorton. It's called the Crouch Valley Lodge, and has a Restaurant called the Blue Toad attached to it.
I think you can look it up and book online. Crouch Valley Lodge in Latchingdon, probably the nearest decent place you're gonna find!
Enjoy your stay in sunny Essex anyway mate!
