Hi everyone

my name is Duncan, and I'm working toward opening a Supercar Club in Auckland - along the lines of Ecurie 25 or P1. Memberships ranging from $23 000 to $55 000, cars to include a Ferrari F430F1, a 360 (manual), a Gallardo, a four-door saloon (M5? Quattroporte) an up-market 4WD (Cayenne or Range Rover) and a small fun car (Lotus or Audi TT RS). Membership to be limited to 30 in the first year.

So what do you think? Any interest? Any comments? Any thoughts about what cars you'd like to see? any other aspects of such a Club that would make it more attractive to you?

Looking forward to hearing your views!

I was a member of the Classic Car Club in the UK and it got me into cars I couldn't justify keeping for very occassional use.
Unfortunately the branch I was in (Birmingham) went bust and the others were too far away to join. The time in the car would be wasted going home driving up the M1, only to have to go back to London to return it. Not the roads nor use I wanted for a fun driving experience.
At that time, the supercar clubs were too new in operation, if operating at all, and too expensive for me!

I like the concept and did enquire with the originators of the Classic Car Club to franchise it here but it's supply and demand like most things in NZ. Those people with $50,000 spare probably already have toys in the garage. Don't most Aucklanders with a few $$$ have cars like the ones you're suggesting wink?

If you can make it attractive enough then I'm sure there are people out there that like the no hassle 'ownership' the clubs provide. If it were on my doorstep and I have a few spare dollars I'd consider it, although my budget and interest probably veers towards classics thumbup

Cheers. Yeah, I wondered about eventually adding some classics to the fleet - a rebuilt E-type or similar. I'd love to have a Countach and a Dino 246 - but they'd have to be "top-shelf" in terms of costs to take them out - similar to a Murcielago / 458.

What do people think - would cars like these make a Supercar club attractive?

I'm not sure the market is really there.... those with $30k+ to throw on cars per year generally have more than a couple of toys.

Duncan,

I'd love to rent some exotic metal without the headache of maintainance, storage, servicing and depreciation and yes, I would pay you handsomely for the opportunity.

But:
These are financially difficult businesses to operate - even in a car hungry, cash heavy European environment and your figures appear unrealistic - for the member that is.

You have 3 million people in the North Island, many of them 600+kms from Auckland so your main target area is Auckland only, that's, give or take, one and half million. The UK has a sixty million + population and still this type of business rarely succeeds.

Also for my $25,000 to $50,000 I'd like more than 5 semi-exotics to knock about in.

Example:
P1 Supercar club charges $12,000 - $30,000 (half of your quoted charges).
And, they offer over 25 vehicles, including these:

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
Audi R8 V10 Spyder
Ferrari Italia 458 Coupe*
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 Spyder
Lamborghini Murcielago
McLaren MP4-12C**
Porsche 911 GT3 RS*

For that, Duncan, I would write you a $30,000 cheque today.

I wish you well and I'm keen to join when it looks viable and exciting, keep us posted.

IMO Super Car Clubs are the way forward, tho' from a business prospective they generate small revenues.

I am based in London and have been a member of a couple of clubs over the past 4/5 years. I just had a Ferrari 430 Spider for 4 days. California a few weeks ago - I have an LP560 in a couple of weeks time. For me, driving all the different cars is great fun. It's a great way to get your Super Car Fix! Favourite car was a black Ferrari 599! Worst, a red Ferrari California. Having been a member of different clubs for a number of years my main priority is the club having the best and latest cars on their fleet.

The best of luck, Duncan. Do keep us posted on things.

Cheers.
