Contesting a speeding fine
Discussion
I came down this morning to a speeding ticket from the NZ police. 75km/h in a 50 limit.
Now, frankly I can't believe this because this is the third ticket I've had since 2001 and after the first two I'm always DAMN sure that when I enter a new zone (this was transitioning from a 100 to a 50) I'm going under the new limit as I enter it.
It just so happens that this time I had a Columbus V900 GPS datalogger in the car the entire time, logging absolutely everything. At the time they state, my logs say I was doing 0km/h (I'd stopped for a coffee), but a few minutes earlier I had slowed from 100 to 50 when entering Sanson on SH1.
I want to contest this, what are my chances of having them provide me with exact details such as the location of the camera? I want to come back to NZ so just not paying isn't really an option.
Thanks.

It usually gives a rough location on the ticket, along the lines of between ----- street and ----street. Most likely it will have been just after the speed change - IIRC there is a limit to how close to a speed change they're allowed to ticket drivers, which they frequently ignore. Could be wrong on that one though.
The only other thing I can say is good luck - its very hard to beat the system regardless of whether you were guilty or not.

Thanks, yes I was done in Darfield two years ago the same way. Thing is because of that (and the one I got on the west coast in 2001) I'm so unbelievably careful, always leave the car on cruise, always hit the brakes long before I need to in order to slow down for the new limit, that I just can't believe this happened.
I'm going to compare the speeds with street view later and see where I was doing the 75km/h.

Have you asked for a copy of the photo ?
Not yet, the letter only arrived this morning (along with one from Avis telling me they charged me $30 for providing my info) so will go through it tonight.I don't mind if it's a fair cop obviously but since I was adamant I wasn't going to get another and was so careful at all times it's a bit of a kick in the balls

Congratulations, I'm assuming you've just been caught by New Zealand's most profitable speed camera. Don't feel bad, it's the most snap-happy camera in the country.
I'm guessing your GPS clock and its clock might have been out by a couple of minutes, but look at the location above in your GPS datalog and see what speed you were doing at that spot.... I'm guessing that even if you do have data showing contrary, you'll still have an uphill battle to prove it sadly

Well I had a closer look last night and it's a fair cop, I can see me pulling out of a parking bay then proceeding up the road up to 78km/h I can only think I was either keeping up with traffic or didn't know the limit was 50, there's probably a good reason it dishes out 1000 fines a month ...
It does suck when that happens.... more ofen than not, SCameras are put on roads where it's "easy" to speed, not where it's dangerous to speed. The ones I know of in Auckland (fixed sites) are all on commuter routes, all of them on multi-lane roads (more than one in either direction) and most in very low-risk areas.

Very much the case unfortunately - easy targets for revenue-gathering and quota-making. Sorry thats right they 'don't have quotas', they're 'performance targets'.

"In the past five years, there have been 79 crashes on this section of road. Three crashes were fatal, and two involved serious injuries.
Mr Parker says the NZTA welcomes Police support for the 80km/h limit."
I wonder if the police supported it because one of their own put a police car on its roof 3 corners into the Brynderwyns.... and save future embarrasment to themselves...
