Emigating to New Zealand

Morning all,
A possible transfer opportunity has come up at work, leading me to look into the possibility of moving to NZ.
Some of my closest friends wax lyrical about the country and over dinner last night the missus and I have been somewhat convinced to have a genuine look into the possibility of moving.
With me being a hardcore PH'er I must prioritise things, so my first question is how can I get my Elise 111S over there, or would it be cheaper to sell in the UK and buy one in NZ?
I am very pleased to see an active PH community, so I certainly feel I could fit in pretty quickly!

Getting your Elise over here and on the road is straightforward. It will cost you around 1400GBP to get it from your door in the UK to legally on the road in NZ. ((Based on a sole use 20' container - there are cheaper ways though Roll on roll of for instance)this includes for Shipping, Shipping Insurance, Devanning, MAF, code of compliance, warrant there are other things that have slipped my mind.....
A number of us have precoded you, as a result,there is a known and established methodology,understanding and contacts developed to assist and a network to foster once established here.
Such people as Me, Esprit, Mr G, WILKO, Iain A, and a couple of others on here will no doubt chip in to offer you their advice too. They are people with experience and a great deal of knowledge with regards importing an Elise amongst other things but essentially....

There is a thread about once a month on here or on seloc regarding Emigrating to NZ, it may be worth your while doing a search and having a read...Happy to assist and answer any questions you may have regarding specifics, happy to discuss off line who I used, and my experiences if you think this will assist you.

I brought my Caterham 7 over 5 years ago. There were a few hoops to jump through, but it wasn't hard.
I used a 20ft container to ship the car and all my household goods... just built a strong shelf above the car.
If you are attached to the car - then bring it. If not have a look at www.trademe.co.nz and see if there is anything that appeals there as a replacement.. However another Elise is always welcome.

I cant comment on how easy it is to import but as you have owned it overseas a personal import shouldnt be too difficult to arrange.
Would assume your S1 111S is worth around £9-10000 +/- which would be just over $20000NZD at the moment.
Cost to buy one here would be $30000- $35000 so importing is likely cheaper than buying here though there are very few Elises here,maybe one or two for sale at any time max and most are non vvc models so not the easiest thing to buy. (see page 96 trademe thread on NZ forum)
Dont put up with another UK winter and try the south pacific!!

Mark, your 111R looks incredible and whilst I make my arrangements at work I will certainly be taking up your kind offer of givng me some more details in who you used to ship your P&J.

Unless you're hankering after a change then the only option is to bring your Elise with you. As long as you've owned it for more than 12mths you won't get stung for import duty, but even if you do, you'd still struggle to replace it with another at a similar price here - plus you know the car well already.
If you haven't found it in one of the older Posts, Ken at KW Historics is your man.

As it's a 111S I think it'll be new enough that it can be imported via the normal process rather than a as special interest vehicle - which has some additional conditions. I've also been told there's some quirk with complying S1's as they don't have sun visors, but Ken would be able to advise on all of this.
Lastly, excellent choice of Elise and colour...

Hi Andy,Having recently brought over a car from the UK my experience was that the all-up cost was more like 3000GBP for a private 20' container. That included 12.5% tax (now 15%) on the value of the 25000GBP car + the cost of shipping which gets added to the value of the car to calculate the tax. Plus there will be other charges to get the car compliant. If you have to go the private container route I would budget 3000-3500 GBP.
But otherwise all thumbs up on emigrating to NZ. I came here 20 years ago with the intention of staying 3 years, 5 year max!

I appreciate you have just done this, but did you enter as a new migrant, first time here?
I would need to check, my understanding is that if this is Andy's first entry to NZ as a migrant, and he has owned the car more than 12 months, and been outside NZ for more than 24 months, then import duty may not apply...
Andy, if you email me your specific circumstances I will check with customs in Wellington...

You are quite right. I now remember something along those lines and it not applying to me. Still, the shipping component didn't seem as cheap as you're saying. The numbers aren't adding up properly in my head. Unfortunately I'm overseas otherwise it would be a simple matter to check my bill. I'll do that on my return. But I stand correct on the tax issue. I managed to dig up an old email. I shipped mine DCB international from Liverpool to Dunedin the cost was 6700 NZD or about 3200 GBP. This was for a private container, all port and MAF charges, and insurance. The difference between my cost and Esprit's 5000 NZD cost may be the extra distance to Dunedin? or the fact that prices have gone up (my car came in Jan 2010...I'm not sure when Esprit's came in). On top of all those charges I then had to pay 12.5% on the cost of the car PLUS the cost of shipping, and this is something you may not have to pay as a new entrant. I also got 3 quotes and DCB was the cheapest.
Wow...that is a huge increase since I shipped mine in Nov 2008.
you got me thinking now, so i had to check my quote, 18/8/2008 1356 GBP Southampton to Wellington from Ray Haball @ www.autoshippers.co.uk the actual shipping was done through Pantalvers, a little higher than my memory served me..
so, my information may no longer be reliable, sorry Andy. I would be interested to know what quote you get as I am thinking about another import soon. If the cost has doubled in 24 months I may have to reconsider...

UK Export Documentation fee (£ 34.00), Total : £ 1425.00.
This is the roll-on roll-off service and so it would be the cheapest way. Has anyone used this service????
